How to install Linux on laptop that is running on windows XP?

Q. My windows recovery CD seems to be pretty damaged and I'm not planning on buying new CD.I know that linux is free,so I would like try it but I don't know how to install it.Can anyone explain me step-by-step?I will really appreciate it.

A. I personally love Ubuntu they have great support in the forums I have Ubuntu 10.4 Lucid on 3 Desktops and 1 Laptop and just cant get enough of it.

Ubuntu is an ethic or humanist philosophy focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. The word has its origin in the Bantu languages of southern Africa. Ubuntu is seen as a classical African concept. The Ubuntu operating system was named for this principle.

The Ubuntu community for sure conforms to this ethic. Ubuntu offers tons of free software and a wonderful GUI and easy to use software management all for free. If you try Ubuntu it will grow on you for sure. Best of luck in finding the best OS for your self hope this has helped.

With Windows 7 you need to run the installer in vista compatability mode

You keep Windows as it is, Wubi only adds an extra option to boot into Ubuntu. Wubi does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the Wubi installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Ubuntu (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Ubuntu is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Ubuntu

How do you share the internet through a Linux laptop?

Q. Im trying to share the internet through a wireless connection on my linux laptop, through to my xbox 360 (via ethernet cable)

A. Bridging, for example, links the two network adapters so that Ethernet frames flow freely between them, just as if they were connected on a simple hub. All of the traffic heard on one interface is passed through to the other.

You can set up a bridge so that the computer itself does not participate in the network at all, essentially transforming the computer into an overpriced Ethernet repeater. But more likely you will want to access the Internet as well as bridge traffic between the ports. That isn't complicated, either.

Bridging requires the bridge-utils package, a standard component of every modern Linux distribution that provides the command-line utility brctl.

To create a bridge between your network adapters, begin by taking both adapters offline with the ifdown command. In our example eth0/eth1 setup, run sudo ifdown eth0 and sudo ifdown eth1 from the command line.

Next, create the bridge with sudo brctl addbr bridge0. The addbr command creates a new "virtual" network adapter named bridge0. You then connect your real network adapters to the bridge with addif: sudo brctl addif bridge0 eth0 adds the first adapter, and sudo brctl addif bridge0 eth1 adds the second.

Once configured, you activate the bridge0 virtual adapter just as you would a normal, physical Ethernet card. You can assign it a static IP address with a command like sudo ifconfig bridge0 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0, or tell it to retrieve its configuration via DHCP with sudo dhclient bridge0.

Both laptops are legally owned. So is Windows 7 (from the one laptop).



How do I "clone" Windows 7 and put it on the linux laptop?

A. You wouldn't. The first thing that would happen would be the windows genuine warning. Secondly, the hardware isn't the same which would only compound your problems.

How do I go about installing windows after linux is already on my hard drive?

How do I swith operating systems on my laptop?

Q. My friend gave me an Ubuntu/Linux laptop but on the side of it it says Windows Vista. Does that mean It used to be Windows and if so how can I change it back. Please help, I really hate using Linux, it's a piece of trash.

A. Linux is great if you know what you are doing, and it isn't hard to figure out. If you must, though, then there are two possibilities for getting Windows back on it.

1. Ask if it is dual partitioned. If it is, then when you turn it on, when it is still in the BIOS it will give you an option briefly for which system to load. Select Windows and you will load up no problem.

2. If it not dual partitioned you will have to use a Windows OS disk. Those can be about $100+ unless your friend has one.

If you don't like Ubuntu you can try Linux Mint or some other nice operating system for free. Different versions of Linux run different and you might like another version better. You could also Google "free non linux OS" or something of the sort.


If you post your main problem with Ubuntu under additional details, I will recommend something further.

Networking - Ubnuntu Linux. Trying to connect another computer to my Linux to use its internet connection?
Q. I am trying to connect another laptop to my linux laptop while its connected to the internet. I want to make a network on my Ubuntu Linux laptop. How?

A. I'm assuming your laptop with the Internet connection is connected with WiFi and the other laptop is hardwired to it with ethernet. You didn't specify a network setup, so this could be totally wrong.

You need to set up NAT on the computer with the Internet connection. Once you have that set up, you should configure the two ethernet interfaces (one on each laptop, they're connected to each other w/ a crossover cable) with IP addresses from a private IP range. You could use something such as 172.16.1.1 (laptop w/ Internet) and 172.16.1.2 (laptop w/o Internet). Then on the laptop w/o Internet, specify it's default gateway as 172.16.1.1.

Don't forget to turn on packet forwarding, this is a common problem that people have and can't seem to figure out:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

How do I switch my Chromebook back to Linux OS?
Q. I recently bought a Acer C7 Chromebook. The only downfall I could see was that it ran on Chrome OS but I had found I could get ChrUbuntu on it and it would run as a fully functional linux laptop. I did this and it worked but since the Chrome OS still lives on in its own dedicated partition it automatically booted into the Chrome OS when I restarted the computer. I would like to know how to run it back in ChrUbuntu. I know it's still on my computer but I don't know how to boot back into it. Thanks in advance!

How do you share the internet through a Linux laptop?

How do I convert my musical technology on my laptop into hardware?

Q. I have a linux laptop with synthesizers, loopers, etc. The laptop is a pain in the ass and 70% of the time I spend with it is troubleshooting. I was wondering if anybody has or had a setup with a looper, synthesiser, and drum machine that is all hardware. I also need to know where to find these. I am also not quite sure about something else: Would a midi keyboard work with a hardware synthesiser and looper. Much appreciation if this question is answered.

How do I connect Windows and Linux?
Q. I have two laptops behind the same router. Both connect to the internet just fine. One is Windows XP Media Center Edition and the other is Ubuntu 6.06. I'm used to using Windows file sharing to share files between Windows laptops. I want to do something similar now between the Windows and Linux laptop. I just care about reliability, speed, and convenience, not security. What are my options and how do I do it?

A. you need to install samba on your linux machine in order for windows to see your linux files.

on linux, you need to mount the windows share using the mount command. you'll need to use type "cifs".

if you can't figure it out, you could always just use IIS WebDAV on windows and Apache WebDAV on Linux. Same concept and it lets you access files just as you normally would but using the HTTP protocol.

A. you need to install samba on your linux machine in order for windows to see your linux files.

on linux, you need to mount the windows share using the mount command. you'll need to use type "cifs".

if you can't figure it out, you could always just use IIS WebDAV on windows and Apache WebDAV on Linux. Same concept and it lets you access files just as you normally would but using the HTTP protocol.

A. It runs Xandros Linux. There are tons of programs available for Linux, but you won't be able to use a lot of the programs you use with Windows. Don't worry, there is tons of alternatives that are, in many cases, better

how can i install itunes on my linux laptop?

Q. i have a linux laptop and i want to put itunes on it i have tried downloading it but when ever i click on it the internet comes up with lots of taps any help?

A. Linux is great if you know what you are doing, and it isn't hard to figure out. If you must, though, then there are two possibilities for getting Windows back on it.

1. Ask if it is dual partitioned. If it is, then when you turn it on, when it is still in the BIOS it will give you an option briefly for which system to load. Select Windows and you will load up no problem.

2. If it not dual partitioned you will have to use a Windows OS disk. Those can be about $100+ unless your friend has one.

If you don't like Ubuntu you can try Linux Mint or some other nice operating system for free. Different versions of Linux run different and you might like another version better. You could also Google "free non linux OS" or something of the sort.


If you post your main problem with Ubuntu under additional details, I will recommend something further.

Networking - Ubnuntu Linux. Trying to connect another computer to my Linux to use its internet connection?

Q. I am trying to connect another laptop to my linux laptop while its connected to the internet. I want to make a network on my Ubuntu Linux laptop. How?

A. I'm assuming your laptop with the Internet connection is connected with WiFi and the other laptop is hardwired to it with ethernet. You didn't specify a network setup, so this could be totally wrong.

You need to set up NAT on the computer with the Internet connection. Once you have that set up, you should configure the two ethernet interfaces (one on each laptop, they're connected to each other w/ a crossover cable) with IP addresses from a private IP range. You could use something such as 172.16.1.1 (laptop w/ Internet) and 172.16.1.2 (laptop w/o Internet). Then on the laptop w/o Internet, specify it's default gateway as 172.16.1.1.

Don't forget to turn on packet forwarding, this is a common problem that people have and can't seem to figure out:

echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward

Are Ohava Linux laptops as good as they describe them?

Q. I am planning to by a Linux Laptop, In my search I ao this company site Ohava but I could not get any review about their devices. Cane anybody help me?

From what I can tell they are a newer company, without a lot of a track record, but on the plus side the designs are straightforward (I would describe them as a mid 90's ironic throwback) and allow easy access to the internals for upgrades and modifications. Also looks like decent price points for the hardware involved.

How do you share the internet through a Linux laptop?

How do I convert my musical technology on my laptop into hardware?
Q. I have a linux laptop with synthesizers, loopers, etc. The laptop is a pain in the ass and 70% of the time I spend with it is troubleshooting. I was wondering if anybody has or had a setup with a looper, synthesiser, and drum machine that is all hardware. I also need to know where to find these. I am also not quite sure about something else: Would a midi keyboard work with a hardware synthesiser and looper. Much appreciation if this question is answered.

A. There are several stand-alone sequencers like the Yamaha QY series. Also, several beat boxes like Korg's Electribe series will output midi data which allows them to be used as both a source of sounds and a sequencer for other drum machines.

I too do not like using laptops live (although I have.) Too many thing to go wrong. If you do end up using a laptop, keep it simple with only a midi sequencer running (like Cakewalk, Cubase, Sonar, etc.) Once you get softsynths running, you're maximizing CPU and memeory resources and running the risk of a crash.

As far as loopers, there are several stand-alone models like the Boss LoopStation. Synthesizer workstation like the Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif will also play loops, although those types of keyboards are very expensive.

How do i use Xarchiver to download files?
Q. I have a linux laptop and i want to download Lubi so i can download further programmes e.g Ubuntu, WIne, Shockwave. When i have downloaded the file for Lubi the Xarchiver thing comes up and it is just a load of files. I dont know how to install the software.

A. You shouldn't have downloaded the Lubi app from the source site.

You should just select Lubi in the Ubuntu Package Manager, instead.

A. Linux and Pentium are 2 totally different things.

Pentium is a common type of processor, and Linux is an Operating System (like Windows for example). If you have Linux on your machine it will look different to a Windows machine, but it will run faster, more efficiantly and won't get viruses.

If you don't know much about computers then I would not suggest installing Linux, it can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing.

How do I convert my musical technology on my laptop into hardware?

Q. I have a linux laptop with synthesizers, loopers, etc. The laptop is a pain in the ass and 70% of the time I spend with it is troubleshooting. I was wondering if anybody has or had a setup with a looper, synthesiser, and drum machine that is all hardware. I also need to know where to find these. I am also not quite sure about something else: Would a midi keyboard work with a hardware synthesiser and looper. Much appreciation if this question is answered.

A. There are several stand-alone sequencers like the Yamaha QY series. Also, several beat boxes like Korg's Electribe series will output midi data which allows them to be used as both a source of sounds and a sequencer for other drum machines.

I too do not like using laptops live (although I have.) Too many thing to go wrong. If you do end up using a laptop, keep it simple with only a midi sequencer running (like Cakewalk, Cubase, Sonar, etc.) Once you get softsynths running, you're maximizing CPU and memeory resources and running the risk of a crash.

As far as loopers, there are several stand-alone models like the Boss LoopStation. Synthesizer workstation like the Roland Fantom or Yamaha Motif will also play loops, although those types of keyboards are very expensive.

How do I swith operating systems on my laptop?
Q. My friend gave me an Ubuntu/Linux laptop but on the side of it it says Windows Vista. Does that mean It used to be Windows and if so how can I change it back. Please help, I really hate using Linux, it's a piece of trash.

A. Linux is great if you know what you are doing, and it isn't hard to figure out. If you must, though, then there are two possibilities for getting Windows back on it.

1. Ask if it is dual partitioned. If it is, then when you turn it on, when it is still in the BIOS it will give you an option briefly for which system to load. Select Windows and you will load up no problem.

2. If it not dual partitioned you will have to use a Windows OS disk. Those can be about $100+ unless your friend has one.

If you don't like Ubuntu you can try Linux Mint or some other nice operating system for free. Different versions of Linux run different and you might like another version better. You could also Google "free non linux OS" or something of the sort.


If you post your main problem with Ubuntu under additional details, I will recommend something further.

What design programs.........Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop?

Q. I LOVE to design, but i am moving with my sister soon and i can't take my old desktop computer that i had when i was living with my mom, so i decided to invest in the Asus Eee PC 8G Linux Laptop(just ordered it online). I was wondering what programs are compatible with this laptop? By the way, i use Photoshop CS3 Extended now. Also if you have any other tips for me about this laptop please leave them!.

A. It runs Xandros Linux. There are tons of programs available for Linux, but you won't be able to use a lot of the programs you use with Windows. Don't worry, there is tons of alternatives that are, in many cases, better

Also, there is a program called Wine, which allows you to run many Windows programs on Linux. I don't think Photoshop CS3 runs yet, but I know Photoshop CS2 runs quite well. Photoshop might take up all the hard drive space on that thing. Check out GIMP for a photoshop alternative, it'll most likely be preinstalled on your laptop

How do i use Xarchiver to download files?
Q. I have a linux laptop and i want to download Lubi so i can download further programmes e.g Ubuntu, WIne, Shockwave. When i have downloaded the file for Lubi the Xarchiver thing comes up and it is just a load of files. I dont know how to install the software.

A. You shouldn't have downloaded the Lubi app from the source site.

You should just select Lubi in the Ubuntu Package Manager, instead.

What is Linux and pantium what is the diffrence?
Q. I am interested to purchase a laptop a Linux system laptop. I would like to know does it works exactly like a pantium laptop. I need one to buy for my son. He will be using it for surfing net and playing games. Can some one please give me an advise. Thanks

A. Linux and Pentium are 2 totally different things.

Pentium is a common type of processor, and Linux is an Operating System (like Windows for example). If you have Linux on your machine it will look different to a Windows machine, but it will run faster, more efficiantly and won't get viruses.

If you don't know much about computers then I would not suggest installing Linux, it can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing.
