What linux Distro should i use for my old PC?

Q. Okay so i've got a old pc.

I've basically put windows 98 on steroids, it has 3 hard drives like 512 MB ram. It's a pentium 3.

so what linux distro should i use.

ps it was originally for windows 2k runs windows XP great.

A. Im running Ubuntu on my old Compaq 1200 notebook 300mb RAM, 500mhz processor, It actually runs pretty good, Im sure your P3 is running at least 1.1ghz so I think Ubuntu is the best OS for you also seeing as Ubuntu has the most drivers of anything built in, you shouldn't have problems with this distro

is it possible to install any linux distro on windows file system?
Q. Like using Ubuntu with wubi. Can other linux distros just be installed on C:\ drive too, like a normal program that could be later removed?

A. There is win32-loader (Debian) which installs Debian within windows but as yet I have not tested it

I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 7 Main Edition which is Ubuntu based. Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint has a feature called mint4win based on the Wubi installer (Ubuntu) http://wubi-installer.org/ which enables you to install Linux Mint within windows

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

You download the iso. image of Linux Mint then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD

Boot in to windows insert the LiveCD you have just created and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where mint4win comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint.

Linux Mint can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

One thing of note the default theme of Linux Mint 7 is utterly hideous but this can easily be changed to the default theme of the previous release Linux Mint 6

What would be my best choice for a linux distro?

Q. i have a dell inspiron 1525. what would be my best choice for a linux distro? could someone maybe point me to a website with the most amount of info on the subject? i'm new to linux and would definately want to learn more about it.

Just download the image file from the web-site. Burn it onto a blank CD and boot live from it (it means you get to use it without messing up anything)

For ubuntu, you can try WUBI if you're afraid of repartitioning and mess up everything

I don't think that "Fedora is good Linux distro since it is fast and quick. Ubuntu is another good one" would run on that spec

look at puppy linux as a frugal or a full install.
Go to the puppy forum and do a search or ask about low ram PC.

A. older distros if you could find them mandrake 9.0 older ubuntus, and stuff like that if your box wont support modern distros
as far as live cds I love old knoppix 3.3

Are you suppose to use different linux distros if you have different purposes?

Q. Or can all linux distro do almost the same if you know the terminal command or scripts? For example if i wanted to do some penetration test with back track but i want to surf the wow anonymously with incognito? Do i have to do them seperately or can i kinda combine them together in one.

A. Terminal commands in almost all Linux distributions are the same commands. Penetration Testing (Forensic) Linux distributions do not make a very good desktop, for everyday use. It doesn't make very much sense to do it on your own hard drive. In most Linux distributions, I believe in the package management program you can find anonymous browsing software to install. And yes one Linux in general can be over bloated with software to your desire.

What was the linux distro that specialized in gaming/geared towards gamers?

Q. I cannot remember what the distro was called, i read about on digg during the past year but cannot find anything about it. If someone knows of the linux distro for gaming please tell me, otherwise just list the distros which best support gaming. One of my friends asked about it and I said I'd find it for him.

A. You might be thinking of Games Knoppix, which is a variant of Knoppix. Here's a URL if you want to check:

Otherwise, I'd recommend you simply install one of the Debian Linux distros, such as Knoppix or Ubuntu and then just look on the Debian web site for the lists of packages and look under games. You could then install the ones you wanted to look at. Good luck.

A. Technically there is no distro specifically designed for web development. You could pick whatever distribution you are comfortable with and then just download the tools used for web development to that Distro. That's one of the best things I like about Linux is its power and its ability to be customized. It really comes down to personal preference.

What is the best linux distro for web development?

Q. Hi, i'm beginning to use linux and was just wondering what the best linux distro for web developing is.

A. Technically there is no distro specifically designed for web development. You could pick whatever distribution you are comfortable with and then just download the tools used for web development to that Distro. That's one of the best things I like about Linux is its power and its ability to be customized. It really comes down to personal preference.

Which is the fastest and the most stable Linux distro?
Q. I'm looking for a fast Linux distro that comes bundled with cool daily-use apps inbuilt. What's the best option?

A. It's always a trade-off - speed sometimes comes with reduced capabilities. As for 'bundled' apps, most Linux distros come relatively plain - you pick and choose your apps from the Repositories.

I think the best compromise right now is Xubuntu. Like Ubuntu it has access to the biggest pool of Apps, but it runs the XFCE desktop instead of Gnome or Unity, much quicker.

For an older PC or Laptop, I concur with a previous answer - Puppy Linux, expecially the NOP versions, are very lightweight and fast, but adding apps is a little more involved.

Try Xubuntu.

What Linux distro to download for maximum Windows software compatibility and feel?

Q. Hello all. I'm a Windows user, but I'd like to try out a Linux distro. I'm looking for an OS that has a similar GUI to windows and similar applications, with high compatibility with Windows programs. I was thinking of Ubuntu. Do you guys have any better suggestions? Thanks.

Which is the fastest and the most stable Linux distro?

Q. I'm looking for a fast Linux distro that comes bundled with cool daily-use apps inbuilt. What's the best option?

A. It's always a trade-off - speed sometimes comes with reduced capabilities. As for 'bundled' apps, most Linux distros come relatively plain - you pick and choose your apps from the Repositories.

I think the best compromise right now is Xubuntu. Like Ubuntu it has access to the biggest pool of Apps, but it runs the XFCE desktop instead of Gnome or Unity, much quicker.

For an older PC or Laptop, I concur with a previous answer - Puppy Linux, expecially the NOP versions, are very lightweight and fast, but adding apps is a little more involved.

Try Xubuntu.

What was the linux distro that specialized in gaming/geared towards gamers?
Q. I cannot remember what the distro was called, i read about on digg during the past year but cannot find anything about it. If someone knows of the linux distro for gaming please tell me, otherwise just list the distros which best support gaming. One of my friends asked about it and I said I'd find it for him.

Otherwise, I'd recommend you simply install one of the Debian Linux distros, such as Knoppix or Ubuntu and then just look on the Debian web site for the lists of packages and look under games. You could then install the ones you wanted to look at. Good luck.

Are you suppose to use different linux distros if you have different purposes?

Q. Or can all linux distro do almost the same if you know the terminal command or scripts? For example if i wanted to do some penetration test with back track but i want to surf the wow anonymously with incognito? Do i have to do them seperately or can i kinda combine them together in one.

A. Terminal commands in almost all Linux distributions are the same commands. Penetration Testing (Forensic) Linux distributions do not make a very good desktop, for everyday use. It doesn't make very much sense to do it on your own hard drive. In most Linux distributions, I believe in the package management program you can find anonymous browsing software to install. And yes one Linux in general can be over bloated with software to your desire.

Im running Ubuntu on my old Compaq 1200 notebook 300mb RAM, 500mhz processor, It actually runs pretty good, Im sure your P3 is running at least 1.1ghz so I think Ubuntu is the best OS for you also seeing as Ubuntu has the most drivers of anything built in, you shouldn't have problems with this distro

Whats is the best linux distro for a win98?

Q. Whats is the best linux distro for a win98? I know about Xubuntu, Fluxbuntu, DSL, Puppy linux but what is the most efficient distro for an old win 98 that will run at a good speed with lots of useful programs installed?

This is a distribution that has a built in wizard to make a LiveUSB version for you from the LiveCD. It also has a persistent mode so that packages you add and changes you make are preserved from session-to-session. Additionally, it has the ability to remaster it's self while running LIVE, if you have sufficient RAM {768mb up}. This means that you can add specific packages you need and create your custom version without having to install it to the HD first. The remastering is done by using the built in wizard.

MCNLive is based on Mandriva 2007 'Spring' which is based on Red Hat/Fedora. It is pre-configured to a large repository of compatible application packages, and you can add additional repositories from other compatible sources.

A. Technically there is no distro specifically designed for web development. You could pick whatever distribution you are comfortable with and then just download the tools used for web development to that Distro. That's one of the best things I like about Linux is its power and its ability to be customized. It really comes down to personal preference.

What linux Distro should i use for my old PC?

Q. I have an old pc Pentium 4 with Intel motherboard. I need a linux distro to be installed for programming purposes and also to learn more about system programming. A. You will learn a lot about system programming with Gentoo, however in order to install it you need to recompile the kernel. In Gentoo, this is more difficult than in any other system, so unless you have years of experience including compiling custom kernels, I really don't recommend Gentoo for this unless you also are considering Linux from Scratch

This page describes installing Gentoo using Kanotix or Knoppix. It is very useful in breaking things down and installing it until you come to recompiling the kernel, which with any LiveCD except gentoo's install disk, you must do the hard way and you won't get an initrd.img:

This page describes using the install disk to put it on. I would read both and the gentoo handbook before and/or during installation. Mr. Zoonekynd uses a gentoo package called genkernel which I also use rather than recompiling the kernel directly and if you follow his instructions EXACTLY, for which you do need an install disk, you will get a working kernel. I managed to get a kernel with genkernel and a Knoppix disk, but it wouldn't use the initrd.img files generated so don't even try it:

The thing about Linux is the choice is usually based on the kind of support you're going to get. Ubuntu, for example has an incredible amount of support but it is all for computer use. Your choices, except gentoo, all have GREAT support for development. RPM can be Fedora and derivatives, Mandriva or Suse. I generally don't like the last two. I have issues with Fedora Core 9. Nevertheless, I have to say, the best help I got when I last experienced it was from developers and about development. You aren't me so I won't tell you what I don't like. Either you will despise it (especially if you were once a satisfied user of the old Red Hat 7.x 8 and 9 back at the turn of the millenium) or you will be very satisfied with it. And ANY forum will be glad to help you with C, C++ or shell scripting.

Debian and Slackware, both of which are currently on my computers, are both excellent choices for software development. Debian is optimized for developers and has the largest community of developers in the world. Slackware is Vanilla Linux, period. Using it will help you develop the skills you need to try gentoo or Linux from scratch, or any other distro come to think of it. Everyone tweaks and changes the packages to make things work together. Slackware makes the fewest changes. While updating it is a little more complicated (read pain) than updating other distros, it really isn't that hard. You find the updates with a web browser, then give -- I think it's updatepkg -- the url for it. Or you can just install everything from third party programs. In other words it's got all the advantages of Gentoo and linuxfromscratch without the disadvantages.

The joke about Debian is that you can use it or gentoo, or you can have a life. Take your pick. It's true (I have Gentoo on a third computer-- the one which most recently had Fedora Core 9 on it). The biggest bear is installation. Someone just described to me trying a "vanilla installation". It took him two weeks. Up until my most recent re-installation I just used the net-install disk. It installs Gnome by default, though, Gnome uses (requires) Mono and my computers object to Mono as much as I do. So I used the KDE live-cd (I think for Etch, actually. Then I just updated it to "testing" so I've been on Lenny/Sid ever since. That just takes about 4 hours.

Also, Knoppix installs a Vanilla Debian with the KDE desktop, so if you want a fast (four hours) easy install of Debian, install Knoppix.

For the most Unix-like OS you should try Slackware (which comes with KDE, XFCE4, fluxbox and TWM window managers but not Gnome) or Gentoo (which you should practically be a Guru before you even try). However, for development Fedora and Debian (especially) have NOTHING to be ashamed of when you are comparing them. They all have excellent developer support and tutorials.
