What is the best antivirus software, how about free antivirus software?

Q. I was just wondering what people's opinion was on the best antivirus software. Download or available for retail purchase, and what people think about the free antivirus programs such as avg, clamwin, and bit defender. Thanks!

A. The best antivirus software (that you have to pay for) is in my opinion two different ones:
Kaspersky- Extremely Secure AV, but really HD intensive excellent choice for desktops
Eset Nod32- Very Low Memory Usage this is HUGE when it comes to a laptop or other mobile device where you might not have the memory to spare like a desktop.
Free AV: Definitely a fan of the open source ClamWin for windows and Clam for Linux, also I like avast but it had trouble getting rid of a couple Trojans that I took care of with bit defender but the problem is windows still says you don't have any anti virus with all the free ones except AVG which as they mentioned is leaving mid January. What does a Mikrotik server do that they use it for sharing satellite connections with friends?
Q. Mikrotik is latvian (eastern european) and is said to be edgy in the computer sense , like the russian kaspersky vs american antivirus suites ; So i ask the computer experts here, what is it that Mikrotik has that could be used for purposes such as these?

A. Mikrotik is a firewall/router. You can load a PC version of it (software), or buy hardware routers with it built in.
Basically it is a "*inux" based system (it may be BSD), that you install and then you have to add all the firewall rules, etc. FOr a very small package, it is quite powerful. I use it as my main firewall at home on a spare PC and 2 network cards.
There are many other Linux based firewalls, all free (Mikrotik has a small license fee).

What Norton Antivirus product should I buy for protecting 6 server machines running windows 2003?

Q. I'd rather run Linux but.. some government people, probably don't know much about computers at all, are forcing us to use Windows.

They want Norton protecting all of them, despite only two of the machines being externally visible.

A. There is a corporate version of Norton Antivirus that has a much smaller memory/cpu usage footprint than the normal retail versions. Its just Symantec Antivirus 11.0. However, they now call it Symantec Endpoint Protection. I'd go with that to keep it simple.

How to remove linux from desktop computer using xp cd?
Q. I am using linux in my computer and do not like it and i want to remove it but i have no idea and i only have xp cd tell the full step.

A. HI There,

I had the same experience using LInux and decided to switch back to XP. Many of the applications I used simply did not work with LInux. Also configuring the printer, scanner (and wireless adapter) were difficult or even impossible. Not Linux's fault but the manufacturers did not include drivers for LInux.

It is not difficult to install XP and it only takes about 40 minutes or so for the installation. After installing there will be about 80 updates from Microsoft which will take longer than the install. If you have the original XP then you will want to update to SP-2 and then update to SP-3 since SP-3 is the only version still supported.

Before installing I like to write down the 25 digit key code on the tag located on the CD ( use big letters and numbers to make it easy to read later ).

Also write down all the settings needed to connect to the internet. Once XP is installed they will no longer be available.

Another thing to do is decide upon which antivirus app you want to install and have the CD or file ready on a flash drive ready for when you connect to the internet. At the very least have the URL written down so you can install ASAP. It only takes a few minutes for an unprotected system to be infected by a virus. The first thing to do after connectingto the interent is to install your antivirus and make sure the firewall is enabled.

Now you are ready to install XP.

To install all you need to do is insert your XP CD/DVD into the optical drive and boot from it then follow the instructions.

You will be asked for your time zone , keyboard configuration, password for admin account and at some time you need to enter the 25 digit COA that you have written down.

You do not need to enter a password (just press <Enter> with the dialog box blank or if you want a password; go ahead and enter it (write it down and save in a safe place). I don't use a password but if you do make sure to remember it .

To boot from the optical drive restart your computer and watch the monitor. It will show the memory and hardware check and at the bottom of the screen it will tell you which key to press to change the boot order. Probably <F12>, <F8>, <Esc> or <Delete>.

As soon as that message appears; press the key and it should boot from the CD/DVD.
If you are not quick enough; shut down and try again.

Once the computer has booted from the CD/DVD drive just follow the instructions for a full installation.
This will format the hard drive and install XP to the entire C-Drive. Formatting will erase Linux and set up the drive for Windows XP.

After the installation has finished you will need to reboot and you will be running Windows XP.
First go into security settings and enable the firewall.
Second setup your internet and connect to the internet. Immediately install your antivirus and let it update. Your antivirus may want to do a full system scan as part of the installation. That's OK.

After the antivirus is running Windows will want to update. If it does not ask then go to the Microsoft website and find updates and install them.

Note: if you XP CD/DVD is not a genuine copy for your system the installation will fail at some point or it will not update.

A. Avast and AVG are both great, both free and both should have linux versions. As the other poster said, you probably won't need one, but having one won't hurt at all (besides, they're free).

what is the best thing about having a Linux based OS?
Q. I was wondering what would be the best thing(s) about an OS like fedora core, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc, that would set them apart from the others.

A. No antivirus, malware, defrag, firewall, and security programs running in the background and taking up system resources.

Much better performance, less crashes, no need to reboot to regain system resources.
Software that will run on any distro, no need to find another program because you upgraded.
Much easier to network.
Open source so you know the program does what it says it will do, no tricks, malicious code, backdoors, or security risks (people do review source code).

What is the best free antivirus for a Macbook Pro with Mac OS X?

Q. I just bought a Macbook Pro and I run Frostwire and I don't have antivirus to protect my Mac. I am new to Apple so I hardly know anything about this yet, so any help with be great, Thanks.

A. clamav is a good antivirus program that has long existed for linux and since the macos is now based on bsd which is a very very similar os to linux, there is a version of clamav for mac too. Im not a mac user so beyond knowing about it, i don't know much about any others.

edit - Actually, there is a very good reason to have virus protection on a mac. Even though most viruses can't run on macs, it doesn't mean they can't be there and transferred to a pc and infect that pc. He says he is downloading stuff using a p2p network and that tends to be one of the most common ways viruses are spread so it is only prudent to have an antivirus program that can scan the downloaded files and clean them up if needed.

What exactly is so great about linux?
Q. I have tried Ubuntu out once but I didn't really see the point of it and I ended up going back to windows 7. What does linux have to offer that windows does not (apart from the fact that its free)? I'd really love to learn more about linux and play around with it (especially customizing it and tweaking settings to personal preference but I don't know if that's what it's about).
Oh and can someone also please recommend a (or perhaps a few) versions I should try out?

A. I'm so glad you ask this question!
Well, linux is great from many points of view. I hope you take your time reading this, and I hope this will prove helpful to you! :D

1. The main one, which is definitely the best thing for an every-day user is the fact that Linux is virus-free. No antivirus, no problems at all with malwares or malicious software.

2. Open source. Open source doesn't mean ONLY that it's free. Aside of the fact that you have FREE licensed OS, there is a huge open source community, constantly working on your linux version (we call them distributions), fixing bugs, or dangerous leaks and making it better, and better every day. With linux, you will always benefit from the latest updates, which is great.

3. Great security. Having no viruses, being open source (constantly updated), with Linux you can be sure you're system is as secure as it can be. As for myself, I feel secure ONLY on Linux.

4. Optimal. Linux is, no doubt, optimal! It is very fast, even on slower computers. As an example, at the Informatics Olympiads in my country, they test the sources both on Windows and Linux, and Linux is faster all the times, sometimes even twice. Linux is faster because of it's relative simplicity, because of it doesn't have all those additional programs which Windows needs for pretty much everything to slow down your computer.

5. Support for all standard formats. With Linux, you are off to go from the moment you install it. It supports pretty much EVERY standard format there is. In windows, to emulate an .iso you need a program (in Linux you don't; of course you can install, if you want a nice user interface), In windows to unzip a .zip you need a program (in Linux, you don't) etc. etc.

6. Great control over your OS. In Linux you got the Terminal, which allows you to do EVERYTHING you want (including to screw up your computer, believe me :)) ). Basically, in Linux you control the system. In Windows it's different, Windows is a closed box, you can only see it's outside. You are forced to use what they give you, how they give it to you. In Linux you can use what you want, how you want. And that's nice.

7. Just like the OS, you benefit from a lot of open source software, which (some of them) are great! Like GIMP instead of Photoshop, Blender instead of... well instead of nothing because Blender is the best out there for 3D Modelling (IMO)..., Inkscape for vector graphics etc.

8. WINE. If you still need a certain program from Windows which doesn't have a version for Linux, there is WINE. WINE is basically a thing which lets you install and run Windows programs as your Linux would be Windows. You can very well install MSOffice, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, anything you want. Even games! Yes, you can play windows games on linux with WINE. For some of them, you may get even better performance than on Windows itself. With a little bit of learning it's ropes WINE will make you forget about windows.

9. Customization! That's another great thing of Linux. On Linux you can customize, tweak, modify anything at your pleasure, given that you know how to do it. Of course, some of the things you can customize easily, some of them harder, but there's always that feel of happiness when you make your system look like you want to. And when you know you did it!

At first, I would suggest you to use a dual boot: Windows 7 and Linux, so that you can switch to Windows whenever you need, until you get familiarized with linux. For this, it is necessary to install Windows first, and then Linux with it's bootloader so that it recognizes both Windows and Linux at boot.

Finally, as you requested, here are some versions (distributions, like I said, or shorter distros):
1. Ubuntu - it is great, user friendly. If you want full customization you should try older versions of Ubuntu, like 10.10 or 11.04. http://ubuntu.com/

2. Linux Mint 12 - the distro I'm using now. It's as great as Ubuntu, if not greater. It's interface is very very nice, and I love it. http://linuxmint.com/

Can I run an antivirus on windows installed on a mac?

Q. I am soon to be getting a macbook, and I plan to run a dual-boot system on it. My question is whether it is safe to install an antivirus on windows, like nod32 while having an antivirus on osX as well. I know that intalling more than one antivirus is a very bad idea, I am wondering if that is true for two operating systems on the same machine.

A. why even dual boot --unless u have a large hdd---just use linux from a pen drive --it is an open source an is safer then windows --it's a plug and play OS----i use it in travel --it's great for cafes and airports --plug in log on lo gout put pen drive in ur pocket

Would any antivirus program prevent that fake antivirus software?

A. Hi There,

Do not click on any of the links when the pop up comes up. Not even the "X" that is supposed to close the pop up. When you click on any choice that "accepts" the download and installation.
Just hit the back button to go to another page or shutdown your browser and clear any personal data.

To minimize the problem set up a guest account (without any privileges) for you web surfing.
Then nothing is supposed to run or change your computer (need admin priviliges for that)

Another sure way would be to do your web surfing using a Linux live CD to prevent any of the fake programs from loading. When you use a live CD everything runs in RAM so when you shutdown everything is gone forever. You can download and burn a live CD or order a free one (takes about two weeks to arrive).

Is it safe to have two different antivirus programs; one for your home computer and one for your flash drive?

Q. So my question's just that. I've learned that it's bad to have more than one antivirus program running on a single computer, but I was wondering, is it okay to one antivirus for my actual at-home computer, and a separate antivirus for the flash drive/portable device? Please and thank you.

I currently have avast! for my home computer and I'm thinking of getting ClamWin for the flash drive.

Would any antivirus program prevent that fake antivirus software?

Q. I just had it and had to set my dell laptop a month before so it'd go away. Would any antivirus program from windows prevent this? If not how can I prevent that fake software crap?! Thanks!

A. Hi There,

Will a Linux operating system be difficult for somebody who used only Windows all life?

Q. Today I decided that I am officially tired with Windows and want to install Linux on my laptop. I read on a website all the pro and cons of each operating system ( Windows, OS, Linux) and discovered that Linux is the only one who had the pro list longer than the cons list. ( windows too vulnerable and Macs too pricey). In any case,in the Linux cons list it said that Linux should only be used by experienced computer users. I know my way around a computer but I cannot call myself and expert. Would it be difficult to transition from Windows to Linux if I am not a computer expert?

A. Welcome to the would of Linux based OSs!!

At one point or another most Linux users made that switch, and it can be difficult IF you try to use Linux (remember Linux is the kernel not the OS) like you use Windows. There is a learning curve that you must overcome. Things are just different, but not difficult. Years ago it was harder, but now, there are many distros (distributions) tailored to new users.

Since you already know the pros and cons, there is no need to discuss them. But when you start using Linux based OSs, you WILL be in "windows mode". This just takes time to overcome. Most people that tried Linux and said it was to hard, did not give themselves enough time to get out of "winblos mode".

When you install a Linux distro, you do not need antivirus, antimalware, firewalls, you do not need to defrag. You can install them if you like, but there is no real need unless it makes you feel better. If you stick to the repos (repositories - just to make it easier to explain - you can think of it like an app store that you use on your phone) you will be safe from malware.

Now the hardest part, at least for me, is to choose which distro. Go to distrowatch.com for info on hundreds of different distros.

When I made the switch from winblows to Linux, here was my criteria:
1. made for beginners - you will have many problems if you jump to a distro made for experts
2. it must be a popular distro - the more people using it, the more help you will receive. you can ask on YA, in a linux forum, or people you know.
3 must look decent. I just don't like an ugly desktop.

Also, you can take almost any distro and add different desktop environments. You can think of the DE as the user interface. You can take Ubuntu, that ships with the Unity DE, and ad another, say KDE. But they do have this already, and called Kubuntu.

You can take Mint (which I recommend for new users) which you can choose form Cinnamon, GNOME, KDE, MATE, Xfce desktops. Or you can add others. Here is a gallery of some of the DEs:

So I would suggest to get an 8 or larger USB flash drive (or what ever you have) and use a program called YUMI to install as many different distros on that drive as it can hold. You choose which distro to boot into on start up. This way you can try out many different distros.

Also try out many of the different DEs. There is no way to know which one is right for you. since they are personal choice. I recommend the KDE since you are coming from winblows. It is pretty and (to me) easier to use. So I recommend Mint with KDE.

There are other made for beginners. If you decide to use Ubuntu make sure that you have a wired internet connection when you install. Ubuntu does not use closed source or proprietary software (it a FOSS thing). It will ask when you install if you want to use restricted software. Mint ships with this software and works better out of the box.

There are distros made for just about anything. If you have an older computer, there are distros for old computers. If this is the case I suggest to not use KDE but one made for older or slower computers. Like LXDE (You can download Mint with LXDE). How to remove linux from desktop computer using xp cd?

A. HI There,

I had the same experience using LInux and decided to switch back to XP. Many of the applications I used simply did not work with LInux. Also configuring the printer, scanner (and wireless adapter) were difficult or even impossible. Not Linux's fault but the manufacturers did not include drivers for LInux.

It is not difficult to install XP and it only takes about 40 minutes or so for the installation. After installing there will be about 80 updates from Microsoft which will take longer than the install. If you have the original XP then you will want to update to SP-2 and then update to SP-3 since SP-3 is the only version still supported.

Before installing I like to write down the 25 digit key code on the tag located on the CD ( use big letters and numbers to make it easy to read later ).

Also write down all the settings needed to connect to the internet. Once XP is installed they will no longer be available.

Another thing to do is decide upon which antivirus app you want to install and have the CD or file ready on a flash drive ready for when you connect to the internet. At the very least have the URL written down so you can install ASAP. It only takes a few minutes for an unprotected system to be infected by a virus. The first thing to do after connectingto the interent is to install your antivirus and make sure the firewall is enabled.

Now you are ready to install XP.

To install all you need to do is insert your XP CD/DVD into the optical drive and boot from it then follow the instructions.

You will be asked for your time zone , keyboard configuration, password for admin account and at some time you need to enter the 25 digit COA that you have written down.

You do not need to enter a password (just press <Enter> with the dialog box blank or if you want a password; go ahead and enter it (write it down and save in a safe place). I don't use a password but if you do make sure to remember it .

To boot from the optical drive restart your computer and watch the monitor. It will show the memory and hardware check and at the bottom of the screen it will tell you which key to press to change the boot order. Probably <F12>, <F8>, <Esc> or <Delete>.

As soon as that message appears; press the key and it should boot from the CD/DVD.
If you are not quick enough; shut down and try again.

Once the computer has booted from the CD/DVD drive just follow the instructions for a full installation.
This will format the hard drive and install XP to the entire C-Drive. Formatting will erase Linux and set up the drive for Windows XP.

After the installation has finished you will need to reboot and you will be running Windows XP.
First go into security settings and enable the firewall.
Second setup your internet and connect to the internet. Immediately install your antivirus and let it update. Your antivirus may want to do a full system scan as part of the installation. That's OK.

After the antivirus is running Windows will want to update. If it does not ask then go to the Microsoft website and find updates and install them.

Is it safe to have two different antivirus programs; one for your home computer and one for your flash drive?

Q. So my question's just that. I've learned that it's bad to have more than one antivirus program running on a single computer, but I was wondering, is it okay to one antivirus for my actual at-home computer, and a separate antivirus for the flash drive/portable device? Please and thank you.

I currently have avast! for my home computer and I'm thinking of getting ClamWin for the flash drive.

What is the best free antivirus for a Macbook Pro with Mac OS X?

A. Hi There,

Do not click on any of the links when the pop up comes up. Not even the "X" that is supposed to close the pop up. When you click on any choice that "accepts" the download and installation.
Just hit the back button to go to another page or shutdown your browser and clear any personal data.

To minimize the problem set up a guest account (without any privileges) for you web surfing.
Then nothing is supposed to run or change your computer (need admin priviliges for that)

Another sure way would be to do your web surfing using a Linux live CD to prevent any of the fake programs from loading. When you use a live CD everything runs in RAM so when you shutdown everything is gone forever. You can download and burn a live CD or order a free one (takes about two weeks to arrive).

How do I get rid of the Bestseller Antivirus malware?

Q. I've tried everything. AVG, SuperAntiSpyware, scanned in safe mode, blocked messenger spam, and yet I still get these annoying popups and notices. At first, I did not know what it was, so I did install a version of the Bestseller Antivirus, but I've uninstalled it now. Please help!

Download the following tools (Some malware will attempt to block your access to antimalware sites so you may have to download these from a different computer and copy them to a transferable media (flashdrive, cdr/dvdr, thumb drive...)

There are some malware that cannot be removed from SafeMode if the machine is infected. This is often the case with rootkits as they compromise the kernel or core 'critical' system files. For those situations you will need to boot into a clean image to perform the virus removal. There are a few ways to do this I typically use a clean boot CD such as UBCD4WIN or Knoppix or the Avira AntiVir Rescue CD or the Kaspersky Rescue CD. Knoppix is Linux Based and has a lot of utilities and tools for fixing your computer from all sorts of problems. The other three options are Windows Based. UBCD4WIN has a lot of tools for system maintenance. The other two are specifically designed for virus removal using two very good anti-virus programs. All 4 are excellent choices and I carry all 4 with me as they each have their own strengths.

If you are not quick enough; shut down and try again.

Once the computer has booted from the CD/DVD drive just follow the instructions for a full installation.
This will format the hard drive and install XP to the entire C-Drive. Formatting will erase Linux and set up the drive for Windows XP.

After the installation has finished you will need to reboot and you will be running Windows XP.
First go into security settings and enable the firewall.
Second setup your internet and connect to the internet. Immediately install your antivirus and let it update. Your antivirus may want to do a full system scan as part of the installation. That's OK.

After the antivirus is running Windows will want to update. If it does not ask then go to the Microsoft website and find updates and install them.

A. clamav is a good antivirus program that has long existed for linux and since the macos is now based on bsd which is a very very similar os to linux, there is a version of clamav for mac too. Im not a mac user so beyond knowing about it, i don't know much about any others.

edit - Actually, there is a very good reason to have virus protection on a mac. Even though most viruses can't run on macs, it doesn't mean they can't be there and transferred to a pc and infect that pc. He says he is downloading stuff using a p2p network and that tends to be one of the most common ways viruses are spread so it is only prudent to have an antivirus program that can scan the downloaded files and clean them up if needed.

How to remove linux from desktop computer using xp cd?

Q. I am using linux in my computer and do not like it and i want to remove it but i have no idea and i only have xp cd tell the full step.

A. HI There,

I had the same experience using LInux and decided to switch back to XP. Many of the applications I used simply did not work with LInux. Also configuring the printer, scanner (and wireless adapter) were difficult or even impossible. Not Linux's fault but the manufacturers did not include drivers for LInux.

It is not difficult to install XP and it only takes about 40 minutes or so for the installation. After installing there will be about 80 updates from Microsoft which will take longer than the install. If you have the original XP then you will want to update to SP-2 and then update to SP-3 since SP-3 is the only version still supported.

Before installing I like to write down the 25 digit key code on the tag located on the CD ( use big letters and numbers to make it easy to read later ).

What exactly is so great about linux?

Q. I have tried Ubuntu out once but I didn't really see the point of it and I ended up going back to windows 7. What does linux have to offer that windows does not (apart from the fact that its free)? I'd really love to learn more about linux and play around with it (especially customizing it and tweaking settings to personal preference but I don't know if that's what it's about).
Oh and can someone also please recommend a (or perhaps a few) versions I should try out?

A. I'm so glad you ask this question!
Well, linux is great from many points of view. I hope you take your time reading this, and I hope this will prove helpful to you! :D

1. The main one, which is definitely the best thing for an every-day user is the fact that Linux is virus-free. No antivirus, no problems at all with malwares or malicious software.

2. Open source. Open source doesn't mean ONLY that it's free. Aside of the fact that you have FREE licensed OS, there is a huge open source community, constantly working on your linux version (we call them distributions), fixing bugs, or dangerous leaks and making it better, and better every day. With linux, you will always benefit from the latest updates, which is great.

3. Great security. Having no viruses, being open source (constantly updated), with Linux you can be sure you're system is as secure as it can be. As for myself, I feel secure ONLY on Linux.

4. Optimal. Linux is, no doubt, optimal! It is very fast, even on slower computers. As an example, at the Informatics Olympiads in my country, they test the sources both on Windows and Linux, and Linux is faster all the times, sometimes even twice. Linux is faster because of it's relative simplicity, because of it doesn't have all those additional programs which Windows needs for pretty much everything to slow down your computer.

5. Support for all standard formats. With Linux, you are off to go from the moment you install it. It supports pretty much EVERY standard format there is. In windows, to emulate an .iso you need a program (in Linux you don't; of course you can install, if you want a nice user interface), In windows to unzip a .zip you need a program (in Linux, you don't) etc. etc.

6. Great control over your OS. In Linux you got the Terminal, which allows you to do EVERYTHING you want (including to screw up your computer, believe me :)) ). Basically, in Linux you control the system. In Windows it's different, Windows is a closed box, you can only see it's outside. You are forced to use what they give you, how they give it to you. In Linux you can use what you want, how you want. And that's nice.

7. Just like the OS, you benefit from a lot of open source software, which (some of them) are great! Like GIMP instead of Photoshop, Blender instead of... well instead of nothing because Blender is the best out there for 3D Modelling (IMO)..., Inkscape for vector graphics etc.

8. WINE. If you still need a certain program from Windows which doesn't have a version for Linux, there is WINE. WINE is basically a thing which lets you install and run Windows programs as your Linux would be Windows. You can very well install MSOffice, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, anything you want. Even games! Yes, you can play windows games on linux with WINE. For some of them, you may get even better performance than on Windows itself. With a little bit of learning it's ropes WINE will make you forget about windows.

9. Customization! That's another great thing of Linux. On Linux you can customize, tweak, modify anything at your pleasure, given that you know how to do it. Of course, some of the things you can customize easily, some of them harder, but there's always that feel of happiness when you make your system look like you want to. And when you know you did it!

At first, I would suggest you to use a dual boot: Windows 7 and Linux, so that you can switch to Windows whenever you need, until you get familiarized with linux. For this, it is necessary to install Windows first, and then Linux with it's bootloader so that it recognizes both Windows and Linux at boot.

Finally, as you requested, here are some versions (distributions, like I said, or shorter distros):
1. Ubuntu - it is great, user friendly. If you want full customization you should try older versions of Ubuntu, like 10.10 or 11.04. http://ubuntu.com/

2. Linux Mint 12 - the distro I'm using now. It's as great as Ubuntu, if not greater. It's interface is very very nice, and I love it. http://linuxmint.com/

A. You need to get one antivirus program, one firewall and some spyware/adware/malware removers if you don't have it.
I use Norton Internet Security (antivirus, spyware, firewall, add blocker, mail spamfilter, pop up blocker etc) Ad Aware, Spybot and more on my desktop running XP Home SP2 with Firefox and Yahoo Toolbar with pop up blocker.
On my laptop i have Ubuntu 7.04. No security needed in Linux, but i use antivirus and firewall. Firefox is standard.
I have no virus, spyware, adware, pop ups etc on my computers.
Mozilla Firefox and Opera are safer browsers to use then Internet Explorer.
