Can I get a job if I learn linux for 6 months?

Q. I am planning to learn Linux for 6 months ( about 3H per day). Will I be ab;le to find a job as entry level easly or not? If not what should I learn to make it happen ? Thx.

A. You should be able to if they are hiring. Kind of toiugh in the job market now but things should get better in a couple months.

To learn linux what distro should I use?
Q. I want to become a Mysql DBA therefore I need to learn linux. What distro should i use between: Mandriva 8. Fedora 8 and Unbutu 7.2?
Also I might use a wireless so I don't want any issue and spending days configuring that. I need a user friendly distro to handle my wireless connection & mysql/PHP duties.

A. Considering you will be spending the bulk of your time messing with mysql itself and your linux viewpoint will mostly be a shell command line and an editor, it probably doesn't matter all that much.

Consider that corps almost always play it safe. That means they go with something that provides support. In the US that primarily means Redhat,, Suse, or Ubuntu. Possibly Fedora or Centos.

Check around to see if you wireless card is support. If not, get one that is. Its not like they are a big expense these days.

A. "Learning Linux" does not get you a job. If it did, I wouldn't be unemployed. You need to learn more than just how to use various GUIs or a couple bash commands. You need to learn stuff like administrating a web server, secure networking, etc... I've been using Linux a solid year and haven't mastered those yet. You will not learn it in six months only spending a little time on it.

What version do I have to start learning linux?

Q. Which version do I have to start learning linux? What version is commonly used in the enterprise? Do all Linux versions have the same command? What is the difference between the versions of linux?

A. Any. All.

Redhat, Debian, and Ubuntu are common in enterprises. CentoOS is a free version of Redhat.

How much can learning Linux help with an understanding of PC hardware?
Q. I'm a good technician, but I'm pretty average when it comes to my knowledge of hardware. I'm looking to kill two birds with one stone by learning Linux.

A. Having Linux as your OS does not help with understanding hardware.

I've been building Intel x86 based systems since 1987 and using linux since 1992 in the Yggdrasil days, while you may have to understand hardware to some degree when installing the Linux OS it's not a pre-requisite as much.

Linux has a stronger network based connection to the hardware then does Microslop or Frapple. In order to understand the complexities of many of the features of Un*x based system you have to know networking essentials. Specifically TCP/IP networking.
Most of the applications served up on Un*x are based in the TCP/IP suite of protocols. Except GIMP, Open Office or emacs or vi.
In the darkages when I was using DOS 3.0 writing batch files was pretty much a normal daily activity, now I spend my days in a vi screen writing shell scripts, sql statements or php scripts.

The way to learn is to do.

IT jobs require 3 years of experience so how do I get in??
I am between 2 choices:
Either learning Linux and try to learn as much as i can home but it might take me 2 years to be good and marketable.
Maybe less what do you guys think?

I am also considering learn SQL Server 2005 to become an assistant DBA.

But even if I have lab to practice both jobs positions
require 3 years of experience.

So my question is job wise what do you recommend me to learn ? Linux or SQL Server 2005?

And if the requirement are 3 years of experience how do I get into the field?

I am 49 so I need to get myself established soon.

A. Can you try a little of both to see which you prefer? Linux is a free download. Get yourself 5 CD's, download and install Fedora and play around with it. Even if that takes you 3 days, that's a small investment to help you decide if you want to spend the next 3 years doing it for a living.

Or, download cygwin (a free unix shell for Windows) and learn to write a few shell scripts.

I don't know how you would try a little SQL Server, but there might be a free evaluation download. You will probably need a book to help you play around with this.

In summary, you can teach yourself just about any computer technology for the price of a fat book ($60) at Barnes and Noble or Borders and a lot of persistence. Persistence and patience may be the most valuable personality traits for a programmer.

Sure, we all get lazy and sometimes have to do things we don't want to do, but if you are totally unwilling to teach yourself difficult things, then you may never excel in the field. Look into management or some related field instead.

Please suggest me a software that i can install in windows XP inorder to learn LINUX commands?

Q. I want to learn linux commands on windows platform (without the requirement of linux OS). I had a software but i forgot the name, can please help getting that similar kind of functionality.

What is the best way to learn Linux operating system?

Q. I have always used Microsoft and desire to learn Linux. I am a programmer by occupation, but everything is done via Windows.
Also, which is the best Linux Distribution?

A. Ubuntu is a great way to go. It is free, and they will even send you free CD's if you can't download it for some reason (if you are asking a question here, I assume you are already online). For me, the best part of Ubuntu is the community. There is a great community of people from around the world, that are very polite and always happy to help answer any questions that you may have: http://www.ubuntuforums.org

Even though Ubuntu is currently on version 5.1 (Breezy Badger), http://ubuntuguide.org which was written for version 5.04 (Warty Warthog), is still a great guide that is very helpful as well.

The Synaptic Package Manager makes it VERY easy to install additional programs, and most of them are free.

There is a live CD (which runs from the CD, but is slower), if you would like to try it without having to install it to your hard drive first:
http://mirror.mcs.anl.gov/pub/ubuntu-iso/5.10/

Give it a try, I am sure that you will like it. I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot about 7 months ago, and I finally removed Windows about 4 months ago. I am here to stay.

How long does it take to learn Linux profressionally ?

Q. I am 46 & I am planning to get into the IT field. All I know is some html 7 css. Now I was recommended to learn Linux to get a job. I am have the choice between learning Linux Administration, or web development or SQL server database. What would you guys do in my shoes? I am 46 & I am giving myself 1 year. Regards.

A. Depends on how much time you'll be willing to spend on learning any of the three, and let's not forget the disposition for them...
If this will be for a job, then think about it... What do you prefer from that list? (becasue you'll be working in that area the entire time afterwards, and people will be conting on you to get the job done...).
There's no "this one's easier to learn" here.. It's all about you...

Currently I am a chat tech for this hosting company and I want to move up to administrator. So, I also want to learn more how to fix things in cpanel as well, Like database issues, Learn about ssl, Plesk, etc

Please let me know if you have any info regarding this.

A. My suggestion is:

(1) Install a Linux OS (e.g. fedora, CentOS, ubuntu) on your desktop or laptop, learn the Linux admin skills. Most hosting companies use CentOS.
(2) Install those hosting softwares used by hosting companies (e.g. firewall, virtualization software, apache, php, etc..), and learn how to use and configure these softwares.

unix is going to be taught in class anyway..?

how do you want to become a computer engineer if you don't know anything about coding, and best starting and learning coding is linux/unix system.

it may not be needed for computer science degree, but you will find it necessary and helpful to learn.

anyway i encourage you to learn it!!

Q. How long does it take to learn linux?

IT jobs require 3 years of experience so how do I get in??
I am between 2 choices:
Either learning Linux and try to learn as much as i can home but it might take me 2 years to be good and marketable.
Maybe less what do you guys think?

I am also considering learn SQL Server 2005 to become an assistant DBA.

But even if I have lab to practice both jobs positions
require 3 years of experience.

So my question is job wise what do you recommend me to learn ? Linux or SQL Server 2005?

And if the requirement are 3 years of experience how do I get into the field?

I am 49 so I need to get myself established soon.

A. Can you try a little of both to see which you prefer? Linux is a free download. Get yourself 5 CD's, download and install Fedora and play around with it. Even if that takes you 3 days, that's a small investment to help you decide if you want to spend the next 3 years doing it for a living.

Or, download cygwin (a free unix shell for Windows) and learn to write a few shell scripts.

I don't know how you would try a little SQL Server, but there might be a free evaluation download. You will probably need a book to help you play around with this.

In summary, you can teach yourself just about any computer technology for the price of a fat book ($60) at Barnes and Noble or Borders and a lot of persistence. Persistence and patience may be the most valuable personality traits for a programmer.

Sure, we all get lazy and sometimes have to do things we don't want to do, but if you are totally unwilling to teach yourself difficult things, then you may never excel in the field. Look into management or some related field instead.

I work for a hosting company I want to learn LINUX?

Q. I work for a hosting company I want to learn LINUX.

Currently I am a chat tech for this hosting company and I want to move up to administrator. So, I also want to learn more how to fix things in cpanel as well, Like database issues, Learn about ssl, Plesk, etc

Please let me know if you have any info regarding this.

A. My suggestion is:

(1) Install a Linux OS (e.g. fedora, CentOS, ubuntu) on your desktop or laptop, learn the Linux admin skills. Most hosting companies use CentOS.
(2) Install those hosting softwares used by hosting companies (e.g. firewall, virtualization software, apache, php, etc..), and learn how to use and configure these softwares.

how do you want to become a computer engineer if you don't know anything about coding, and best starting and learning coding is linux/unix system.

it may not be needed for computer science degree, but you will find it necessary and helpful to learn.

I can't really give a good answer but Linux is starting to make way even though it is older than mac and windows a lot of companies is starting to go to it just because most of the OS are free yes there is a few you do have to pay for example Red Hat. So their going to need someone with knowledge of Linux also a lot of companies have already used it for servers because it is very hard to hack and almost crash proof something microsoft can't say about windows. So the don't have to worry about the servers going down a lot but people still won't go over to Linux because microsoft sells them self as the best when their defenty not their probably the worse so when you go for a job interview tell them about Linux and maybe have a user friendly version on a lap top for them to try you never know if they like their going to need someone to install and set it up for them and that person could be you
and also their going to need a web page odd are and their not going to want to pay alot for a server just to have a page on the internet expetaly small companies

If I learn Linux for 6 months can I get an entry level job?

Q. I am planning to learn Linux for 6 months ( about 3H per day). Will I be ab;le to find a job as entry level easly or not? If not what should I learn to make it happen ? Thx.

A. "Learning Linux" does not get you a job. If it did, I wouldn't be unemployed. You need to learn more than just how to use various GUIs or a couple bash commands. You need to learn stuff like administrating a web server, secure networking, etc... I've been using Linux a solid year and haven't mastered those yet. You will not learn it in six months only spending a little time on it.

What version do I have to start learning linux?

A. Any. All.

Redhat, Debian, and Ubuntu are common in enterprises. CentoOS is a free version of Redhat.

Q. I'm a good technician, but I'm pretty average when it comes to my knowledge of hardware. I'm looking to kill two birds with one stone by learning Linux.

A. Having Linux as your OS does not help with understanding hardware.

I've been building Intel x86 based systems since 1987 and using linux since 1992 in the Yggdrasil days, while you may have to understand hardware to some degree when installing the Linux OS it's not a pre-requisite as much.

Linux has a stronger network based connection to the hardware then does Microslop or Frapple. In order to understand the complexities of many of the features of Un*x based system you have to know networking essentials. Specifically TCP/IP networking.
Most of the applications served up on Un*x are based in the TCP/IP suite of protocols. Except GIMP, Open Office or emacs or vi.
In the darkages when I was using DOS 3.0 writing batch files was pretty much a normal daily activity, now I spend my days in a vi screen writing shell scripts, sql statements or php scripts.

The way to learn is to do.

Q. I want to become a Mysql DBA therefore I need to learn linux. What distro should i use between: Mandriva 8. Fedora 8 and Unbutu 7.2?
Also I might use a wireless so I don't want any issue and spending days configuring that. I need a user friendly distro to handle my wireless connection & mysql/PHP duties.

A. Considering you will be spending the bulk of your time messing with mysql itself and your linux viewpoint will mostly be a shell command line and an editor, it probably doesn't matter all that much.

Consider that corps almost always play it safe. That means they go with something that provides support. In the US that primarily means Redhat,, Suse, or Ubuntu. Possibly Fedora or Centos.

Check around to see if you wireless card is support. If not, get one that is. Its not like they are a big expense these days.

Please suggest me a software that i can install in windows XP inorder to learn LINUX commands?
