A. Use the deb:
http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_10_linux.deb
I think you can install it with a double-click, but if not run:
sudo dpkg -i install_flash_player_10_linux.deb

A. As a beginner, you should install software from the "Ubuntu Repositories", only. That's the best way to get the right versions for trouble-free operation.
I'm assuming that you have Ubuntu version 9.10. I'm using 8.04 on this computer, so you may find slight differences in these instructions. I'm also assuming that you can connect to the Internet, and to one of the Ubuntu Repositories (or mirror sites).
Start Synaptic Package Manager: "System" | "Administration" | "Synaptic Package Manager". Enter your password when requested.
Click "Reload". This will freshen your list of packages.
When that's done, click "Search". Enter "sun-java" (without the quotes) in the search box, and click on "search".
When the list comes up, click on, and select "install", for the following packages:
sun-java6-bin
sun-java6-jre
sun-java6-plugin
Then, click "Apply".
Synaptic Package Manager should then download and install what you will need to run Java applications.
Good Luck.
