Can you open a linux file using windows?

Q. I need to open a linux file using windows.
I don't have linux installed anywhere on this system.
Is it possible to open a linux file using windows? If so, how and what?

A. Yes, you can open Linux files on Windows. Whether or not you have the necessary program/emulator installed which can read/interpret/run that file is another matter, and depends on what specific type of file you're talking about.

How can I get Simply Accounting to work on a Samba enabled Linux file server?
Q. Simply Accounting states that for multi-user mode, all machines that use the Simply (client and server) must be using the same operating system. How can I use Windows workstations that run the Simply client with a Samba enabled Linux file server that houses the Simply database?

A. You can't. You need the same platform accross the network

What is the difference between "./" and "../" regarding LINUX file structure?
Q. Can you suggest a good material(s) (an e-book for an example) to learn and understand about the Linux file and directory structure??

A. ./ is your current directory. So if your running a program from the current directory you type ./<program>
../ is the previous directory. This is to back out of the current directory.

What are the the benefits of a Linux OS over Windows?

Q. What are the the benefits of a Linux OS over Windows. Can I do almost everything on a Linux OS that I can do on Windows, also which is the best Linux OS?

A. There are a couple of advantages I can think of:

It is free. Windows is way over priced.

It is stable. It seems like I am always having to reboot Windows.

It is less corruptable. It seems like I end up re-installing Windows about once a year to clean up problems with it.

It is more secure. Not only do hackers target it less frequently for viruses and such (due to its smaller install base), but you have thousands of developers examining the code base and looking to plug leaks.

It is a true multi-tasking OS. Windows was originally a single task OS which was twisted and perverted over the years to do multi-tasking.

Once you learn how to work at the command prompt level, Linux offers a much larger and more powerful set of tools for doing things on your computer.

There are many more free programs available for Linux. Microsoft has hidden many of the features of Windows so that only their expensive code can take advantage of them - not so with Linux. You can, for instance, get a full featured Office replacement for free.

Drawback: There are a number of programs offered ONLY on Windows.

Which is best? Depends on what you want. Ubuntu is a good all-around replacement for Windows. If you are doing 'server' type of work I'd go with RedHat or CentOS (which is actually RedHat, one version back).

How do i partion my hard drive so i can put the Linux OS(Unbuntu) onto it and choose to boot Linux instead?
Q. How do i partion my hard drive so i can put the Linux OS(Unbuntu) onto it and choose to boot Linux instead?

Some links would be nice, Thanks!

A. you need to provide more information when you ask a question like this. Assuming you have windows xp installed on your computer:

assuming you have vista installed

How do you remove a Linux OS to install windows?
Q. I purchased a "used" computer from my company and it has a Linux OS on it. I would like to wipe it clean and install windows, but not sure how. Is there an easy way to do this?
I tried starting up with the windows 7 disk, in hopes it would just "over ride" the other, but no luck. The current OS is uBuntu...not sure if that makes a difference or not.

A. If you have a cd/dvd of the operating system you want, just put in on your optical drive
turn on your computer, press F8 or whatever button to change start up drive, change booth drive to your optical drive, save setting, exit and reboot.
Your computer will read your cd/dvd and will prompt you.
It will find your hard drive and ask you if you want to install it on that drive. (default C drive).
If you have a huge hard drive, you can partition your C drive to whatever size you want.
I prefer to assign only 50 Gig for drive C. Once the operating system is installed, I partition the remaining drive and use it as storage drive.
It fill format the drive and install your operating system.
Just follow the instructions of the install prompts.

If you are still having problems, use a separate computer, search for Hiren's boot cd in .iso format. Download and burn on cd/dvd. Just boot the cd in your used computer. It has a lot of partitioning programs you can choose to reformat your hard drive.

How to have linux VPS keep running java server?

Q. I have the server an all working.
Minecraft server actually.
But I noticed the server will stop when I close my putty the server will server aswell.
How do I get it to constantly run? Even if my computer is off or not

A. one way would be to use nohup. just start your program with something like:
nohup ./yourprogram
that will keep the program alive, even when you log out. but this will not work with programs that take input from the console.
another way is to use a screen session (if screen is installed). with the command "screen" you start a shell session in which you can then start programs. if you press ctrl+a, ctrl+d (in that order), the session gets detached and will continue after you log out. after logging in, you can resume the session with "screen -r sessionname".
for more informations, try "man screen" or "man nohup".

How do i configure vnc on a linux vps?
Q. I installed vnc server with yum on putty and don't know what to do now, launched it and can't connect to it.

A. You have a vncserver running?

vncserver -list

If not, set your vncpasswd with that very utility if you haven't, then run...

vncserver

to start one up on the default port 1. Can also say "vncserver :2" and so forth. Then connect to the IP with a viewer. Might have to say IP:5901 (5902, whatever the port is you started it on)

vncserver -kill :1 (or whatever port), when you're done with the server.

What slows down computers besides memory usage?

Q. I just deleted a whole lot from my laptop, and I ran a 'defragmentation' on the hard-drive, but it's still going really slow. Any ideas?
More detail: It's slow to open programs or new windows. There's a delay between when I click an icon and when the window opens.

A. Are you familiar with the Task manager? (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) The task manager will show you which processes are using you processor power and how much virtual memory.

What version of Windozes? Have you tried using a registry cleaner? Do you have a reliable anti-virus?

When I used to use Windozes, I had to wipe it about every 6 months and start over. It just seemed to get unstable after prolonged use. I now use Ubuntu Linux.

What operating system should i install on a VERY old computer?
Q. The computer again is extremely old, ie 5-6 years (integrated graphics, 1 gig ram, pentium processor, etc). Now i want to find an OS that is both simple to use and one that will run efficiently, especially for viewing photos and movies (obviously this is bottle-necked by hardware, but there should be differences in memory and cpu usage from OS to OS),

So what do you suggest? the new chrome OS, win XP, ubuntu?

A. Old machines run best on what they were designed for, But time marches on and computer os support runs out of steam. If your machine was designed for XP os then use it, upgrade as much of the hardware as economical and go from there. You may find it would be best to purchase a new machine rather then try to upgrade on your own. If that is not an option and you are determined then you should start with the memory, then the video card. If your machine is at least a P4 running at close to 2.0GHz then you will have a chance depending on your technical ability. If not then you should shop the internet for a used system that is within the price range of what you are going to spend on upgrading your machine. To answer your question Google Chrome OS is only to be used for the modern netbooks (condensed and stripped down laptop computers), Win XP was most likely the OS that was installed at the factory on your machine, and Linux Ubuntu is free and open source software.... XP is my choice

How to find my Linux System Information?
Q. I know how to find it on Windows. But how do I find my system information on Linux Operating system. Thanks.

A. Open the command prompt, it might be known as Terminal. The following commands will allow you to find your system information.

System Information
archPrint machine architecture.
df Shows disk free space.
duShows disk usage.
freeDisplay used and free memory on the system.
ipcrmProvide information on ipc facilities.
ipcsSame as ipcrm.
lsdevDisplay information about installed hardware via files in the /proc directory.
lsofList open files.
lspciList PCI devices .
pnpdumpLists ISA plug and play devices resource information.
procinfoDisplay system status gathered from proc.
pstreeDisplay a tree of processes.
runlevelFind the current and previous system runlevel.
straceTrace ssytem calls and signals for a binary program.
sttyChange and print terminal line settings.
tloadPrints a graphic representation of the system load average.
ttyPrint the filename of the terminal connected to standard input.
unamePrint system information, Prints Linux.
vmstatReport virtual memory statistics.
xcpustateDisplays CPU states (idle, nice, system, kernel) statistics. Runs in X?

Knowing what distribution you use would be helpful. If you need more help I'd recommend looking at the website of the distribution you use.

How can I transfer a letter in my Document file to my Notepad?

Q. I would like to send a letter in my Document file to Notepad so that I can edit it there and email it to another recipient. How can I do this? If I cannot, any other suggestions? My scanner (printer) is not working.

A. Copy the .doc file to Notepad, save as a .txt file. Save that file in Notepad.
The OS would help. But that is how I do such stuff from Windows to Mac to BSD to Linux.

How can I break down a huge list of emails I have in a notepad file so I dont have to count each one?
Q. I have a notepad file with over 40,000 email addresses, how can I break that down to list of 5,000 - 10,000.

A. You can get cygwin and use the Linux/Unix commands to do that easily.

See the "split" command.

What is the difference between visual c++ and notepad++?
Q. Like the question asks I want to know, "what is the difference between visual c++ and notepad++?

A. Notepad++
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦

Notepad++ is a source code editor for Windows.
Notepad++ supports syntax highlighting for 48 programming, scripting, and markup languages. Users can also define their own language by using the built-in User Language Define System to have syntax highlighting and syntax folding.
Notepad++ is available only for the Microsoft Windows operating system. However, users can still get Notepad++ to work on other platforms, like Linux and Mac OS X, using software such as Wine.

C++
â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦

C++ is a general-purpose programming language. It is regarded as a middle-level language, as it comprises a combination of both high-level and low-level language features.
The language began as enhancements to C, first adding classes, then virtual functions, operator overloading, multiple inheritance, templates, and exception handling among other features.

How can I install 2 or more Linux distros on 1 HDD?

Q. Hi everyone

I want to install 2 or perhaps 3 Linux distros on my notebook. I have a 160GB HDD. How many partitions should I have?

Thanks in advance.

A. One partition for each distro (ext3, ext4 are recommended), and one smaller swap partition.

What Linux distro to download for maximum Windows software compatibility and feel?
Q. Hello all. I'm a Windows user, but I'd like to try out a Linux distro. I'm looking for an OS that has a similar GUI to windows and similar applications, with high compatibility with Windows programs. I was thinking of Ubuntu. Do you guys have any better suggestions? Thanks.

A. I thoroughly recommend Linux Mint 8 Main Edition which is built upon Ubuntu 9.10 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

Linux Mint 8 Download
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=44

The Perfect Desktop - Linux Mint 8 (Helena)
http://www.howtoforge.com/the-perfect-desktop-linux-mint-8-helena

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 8 then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD for installation

Linux Mint 8 can also be run direct from the LiveCD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

INSTALL LINUX MINT WITHIN WINDOWS (not currently available for Linux Mint 8)

To install Linux Mint within windows you will need the earlier release Linux Mint 7 which is built upon Ubuntu 9.04

Linux Mint 7 Download
http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=38

Linux Mint 7 has a feature called mint4win based on the Wubi installer (Ubuntu) which enables you to install Linux Mint within windows (Windows 7 run Wubi/mint4win in vista compatability mode)

Mint4Win â A Wubi based Installer for Linux Mint
http://duncsweb.com/2009/09/27/mint4win-a-wubi-based-installer-of-linux-mint/

Installing Ubuntu as a dual-boot with Windows without partitioning
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win like Wubi keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the LiveCD you have just created and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where mint4win comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint 7 is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

What is the best linux distro for me?
Q. I am looking for a good linux distro. I don't like the standard GNOME 3 as I have tried the fedora live cd. I have tried KDE, its pretty good. I am currently running Kubuntu 11.10 and had ubuntu 11.04 unity before but I would like a linux thats advanced but easy. Thanks for your help.

A. The Linux Desktop is currently a mess with a plethora of options available. Unity as on Ubuntu 11.10 and GNOME 3 as on Fedora 16 are cluttered and in my opinion not suitable for use on a production machine. I need a Desktop Environment that allows me to just get things done with minimal fuss. This is where the older Gnome 2 Desktop Environment excels.

Linux Mint 12 goes some way to addressing this wth MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) which is a layer built on top of GNOME 3 however like other distros. such as Fedora to deploy the GNOME 3 Desktop Environment for me does not convince

Linux Desktop Faceoff GNOME 3 vs Ubuntu Unity
http://lifehacker.com/5853099/linux-desktop-faceoff-gnome-3-vs-ubuntu-unity

There is a new project being developed by Linux Mint called Cinnamon however as with MGSE it is a layer built on top of GNOME 3
http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/

I thoroughly recommend the earlier release Linux Mint 11 which is built upon Ubuntu 11.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled
