How do I save Java on my remastered puppy linux live cd?

Q. I know how to down load Java and install on puppy linux 5.2 but how to you save it on the live cd so I don't have to download every time I restart.

A. Download the java.pet to the applications folder from the quickpet or where ever you download yours from. But don't install. After the download is complete remaster the live-cd.

Java will be waiting for you when ever you boot your live-cd. All you'll have to do is open the folder, click the pet and install. This is the only way to avoid re-downloading each time.

How does one run puppy linux in such a manner?
Q. I would like to keep a distro of puppy linux on a flash drive and I would like to keep all the downloads, applications, system files, boot sectors, etc. on the same flash drive so that it serves as a hard drive in a way.
Is there any way for me to do that?

A. Yes, it is a while since I ran puppy but when you first shut it down it should ask you where you want to create a file and if you select your flash drive thats where they will be

I think what i did is install all the software I wanted and the did a 'full install' to a USB stick. This option is available in puppy somewhere

Puppy is very quick and great for recovering PCs and for browsing
I eventually moved to slitaz because puppy used to hang my router on shutdown and I get fed-up power-cycling the router

Hopefully some-one has done this more recently than me and has better recall - but I know it can be done pretty easily

Q. Hi, please help me. I am really stuck with this. I just set up puppy linux OS I want to install some software. But whenever I click on the setup file of a software, it says something like that I don't have a run action set. Now how can I install a software in puppy linux? Thanks.

A. You have to use the puppy linux way of installing apps, not the windows way (which is look for apps on the net and download and use the windows installer).

Am I risking lossing my operating system by booting my laptop with a linux live cd?

Q. I have windows 7 on my laptop and it wont really start up, so im going to recover my data from it by using a linux live cd to boot it up. Is there any risk that ill lose my windows 7 in the process?

A. No. Booting Linux from a CD won't harm your windows (unless you deliberately format your hard drive and install Linux from the CD). It's a good way to recover your data, but you'll still have to fix or re-install Windows.

Can you use PHP and Mysql with a Linux Live CD?
Q. If you come back to Windows will all your PHP & Mysql settings gone? Do you have to reinstall everything again if you decide to use a second time the Linux Live CD?? I don't want to install Linux permanently o0n my sustem but I would like to work with the Lice CD without losing my work & setings. Is it possible?

A. Linux LiveCD's are run within the RAM of your PC so you cannot save you settings between LIVE sessions.

If my computer wont boot a linux live cd, does that mean it wont but a xp cd either?
Q. the laptop is set to boot from cd first. the linux live cd used to work but it has stopped working, does this mean this particular function wont work for other live cd's?

A. There are a lot of things that can cause a failure to boot so it depends on how far along in the process you are getting and what is causing the failure to boot. I've used knoppix as a boot cd for testing and diagnostics on hundreds of machines and it has booted on nearly every machine I've tried it on. The only failures to boot were due to not having enough ram in the computer to load the OS into memory.

However if your computer BIOS does not recognize the concept of bootable cd's then that computer won't boot from any cd. If that is the case then you might be able to add that capability with a bios upgrade.

It's also possible that the bios configuration excludes the CD from the systems search for bootable media. You may need to modify the bios to move the CD up in the boot order or use the "boot menu" (usually accessed by hitting f12 during post)

edited -- another possibility is that you have a CD drive which is not able to read a DVD. The DVD may be bootable but it can't be read by a cd drive.

Now you rule out most of these possibilities since you state that it used to work. That suggests to me that the disk has been damaged, (scratched?). The only other likely cause would be that the CD drive itself is dirty or damaged which might prevent it from reading the disk.

Have you tried other boot disks?

How to get diner dash to play linux?

Q. Have linux on my computer i want to play diner dash... i have tried wine and all that crap currently wine wont open anything so i am very unhappy. i have also tried virtual box i am on linux 10.4 and stupid virtual box will not install windows it gets half way and stops.

A. Try the program PlayOnLinux. if that does not work than I believe you are out of luck. Dont leave Linux though. Because are gaming base with double within the next 3 month. Valve is currently working on steam for linux. This will give us a big library of games.

How do I run Steam games on Linux?
Q. I got Steam to work on Linux using Wine. All my games worked just fine for a while, but all of the sudden none of them will run (except Portal for some reason). When i try to open them it says, "Preparing to launch," then does nothing. Does anyone know what the problem is, or how to fix it?

A. You could use a program like WINE (Windows Emulator) to get it going. Or you can try a virtual machine but sometimes that wont load drivers and you still wont be able to play. The best option will be a dual boot of windows and linux. The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

How do i use a graphical file manager so i can use steam on "Linux"?
Q. So i wan to use steam on my school macbook that i can bring home. But to use programs like steam i have to use linux (works for minecraft). The only way I can use steam on linux is to open it with a graphical file manager (i downloaded muCommander). I don't know how to use one because i don't use linux. I'd love some help.

A. I'm not sure what you are trying to accomplish.

Steam can be installed to Windows or Mac.

File managers can be used for any operating system if one is written for it.

If you are using it on a Linux machine, it seems that they have it in limited beta. You may not be able to participate in this beta version.

How to install red hat enterprise linux 5 on a mac?

Q. I already have a mac with a core 2 duo with 3gb of ram

I already have leopard and I have installed xp using boot camp

I have Vmware fusion and I wanna install and use Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

A. You can run RHEL on as small as 5GB of HD space but I strongly recommend having at least 20GB dedicated to RHEL (very few modern OS can function efficiently with less then 20GB for files, programs, etc).

How can i uninstall linux from my pc and switch to windows?
Q. After modifying my BIOS I installed 'red hat- enterprise linux 5'. I had to enable the hard disk drive mode into RAID from IDE before installing. Now when i attempted to install windows, i turned the hard disk mode into IDE from RAID. But when i entered the windows installation cd, there is no installation page displayed. Please help!!!

A. What DO you see on your screen when you use the windows cd?
Is your bios set to boot from cd?
If all else fails google for dos boot disk and one of those would let you reformat and partition you hard drive. THen try the windows cd again.

If I install Ultra VCN to a linux Os will my machine reboot?

A. First question, why would a firewall (network device) need to authenticate against AD?
If trying to control users in the Firewall with AD , try maybe Radius. There are a few free versions out there.

PS Smoothwall is "free", as most Linux firewalls. What may not be free is add-ons or support...

How can I protect other machines on my Lan using virtual firewall appliance ?
Q. If I have a Windows machine with a virtual linux based firewall appliance inside of it, I know how to protect the host machine with the firewall. How do I protect the other machines on the LAN using the virtual appliance ? Would I only have to set the "Gateway" setting of the other machines to the address of the virtual machine ?

A. Yes, and set their firewalls to block anything not comming from the appliance.

What is the best version of Linux for programmers?

Q. Hi, I'm a programmer and I'm currently using Ubuntu as my main OS which I want. I looking for the best version of Linux or any other type of free OS that is good for a programmer. Ubuntu is the most user friendly version of Linux but I want a OS that is good for a programmer. Anyone have any suggestions?

A. I'm not too sure, I think that all GNU/Linux distros are a good choice, you may want to go with one that is very stable such as, CentOS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux), Debian, or Slackware. You may even want to try Gentoo (or Sabayon Linux which is a user friendly Gentoo) which you need to know how your computer components work to set it up properly.

What Linux distro is good for a beginner?
Q. I have absolutely no experience with Linux, but I want to try running one on a VM. I'm thinking of getting Ubuntu 12.04 or Mint 13.

A. In ascending order of how ambitious you wish to be:

Easy: Ubuntu, Mint, Zorin, Pinguy, Fuduntu, Mandriva, Solus

Moderate: Fedora, OpenSUSE, Debian, Puppy, CentOS, Bodhi

Advanced: Arch, Gentoo, Slackware

Of the two you mention, Ubuntu is the one which will require more "hands on" configuration, as Mint offers Flash, mp3, and DVD support out-of-the-box; Unity also has a less-traditional desktop than Mint in either the MATE or Cinnamon editions.

What are some linux video editing softwares?

Q. Hi. I have a 32 bit ubuntu computer. I am an editor, Filmer, Director, and Producer. I recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu. I need a good video editing program. Heres what I'm looking for. A program that you can crop videos and add effects. Thats really it. I used to use Windows Movie Maker. Something similar to that would be GREAT!

My very favourite video editing program is the Linux program OpenShot. It is quite intuitive, and very powerful. I am using it on Ubuntu. This website will explain the technical issues:

I like it much better than Nero, and of course it is an open source progrm. It has cromakey capabilities so I use greenscreen to make my subtitles.

For music editing (I sometime use sound) I use Audacity.

Is there a pan and zoom effect available on kdenlive for opensuse?
Q. Im using the linux based video editing program kdenlive which i currently have running on opensuse 13. I was trying to compile a video slideshow of images and wanted to use a pan and zoom effect but dont understand how. The option is there but I cant figure out how to apply it. It seems like its not working but Im sure its a user error. Anyone familiar with this program that can tell me what im doing wrong?
