How do I download stuff on a Linux computer?

Q. My brother just made the Dell computer a Linux and I have no idea how to download anything. I keep trying to download Skype but it won't download correctly when I press Save. It keeps opening a new link on Google Chrome and its about blank. How do I download stuff on a Linux computer? I think its a Ubuntu! Please help I'm clueless and just guessing what kind of Linux it is because my brother did it.

A. If you're sure it's Ubuntu, try visiting this page:

Computer requirements for college? Is a linux computer a bad idea?
Q. I will need a computer for college, and I heard that some schools limit what OS's or types of computer their students can bring. For example, only windows, or only computers with Microsoft Word. Do any of you go to college and know whether this is true? And if you do have a linux computer at college (which I want) have there been any problems?

A. I had a couple issues using a linux distro in college. Most I was able to resolve; however, 1 issue a did run into was that some of the online resources that the college required me to access were only compatible with Internet Exploder... cough.. hack, I mean Internet Explorer. Granted this was entirely the resource's flaw and had nothing to do with linux, but there wasnt much i could do about it. If anything, u may just want to do a multi-boot setup. You should be able to get a discounted or *free copy of windows from the school, so multi-booting shouldnt be to big of an issue

Is it worth buying a Linux computer - or are they not very good?
Q. I am planning on buying a linux computer but I have never owned one before, I was wondering if anyone knew anything about them - can you use word programs and computer games like The Sims?
Thank :)

A. dude, you need windows. if you even have to ask the question, get windows.

Original Question

Where to start for becoming a linux master?
Q. I have ubuntu 8.10 installed on my macbook and I am familiar with the gui as well as other desktop environments. But, I have no clue how to program, what a source code is, or how to build my own linux distro from scratch. I do know how to install several operating systems, how to partition a hard drive, and how to install hardware. I'd like to be a programmer someday and I want to know where to start. Thanks!
I don't like kde at all.

A. Check this out:
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

It guides you through building a distro from scratch.

Source code is basically the "recipe" to a program. A compiler converts source code to binary.

KDE wasn't my preferred desktop environment at first either, but as I started using it and discovered how much more configurable it is and found some of it's unique features (that the other DE's don't have), it became my favorite desktop environment.

But if you want to learn more about Linux, try using a distro that doesn't try to emulate Windows. Using slackware has taught me a lot.

What is a good book for learning UNIX and Linux?
Q. I'm a windows person, but have played with Ubuntu before, but I don't know much of anything about it. I would like to learn to program bash/shell code. My end goal is to build my own custom Linux distro, if not through Linux From Scratch at least customize a solid system. Much appreciation!!!!

A. Here is a very basic and complete book on linux.
Good luck

linux. The reason being, that for the sake of stability, for the drivers to work, and for you to get a good performance it is just easier to play on Windows (since all PC games are generally designed for Windows environments).

How can i play COD MW2 on Linux Ubuntu?
Q. So i bought MW2 and installed steam on linux and then installed the game... after it finished, i launch the game and it opens but with a dark screen and the words seem to be corrupted , like they do not appear and i cant do anything with it... how can i play MW2 on my computer, although i have Wine and the game opens through it already,,, what should i do?

Thanks in Advance,

i did install wine from before... and i dont know how to open the game in window mode , can you please tell me how?

A. Try using PlayOnLinux. It will configure Wine automatically for COD MW2.

linux server by using 3rd parties vncviewer. But when the user (root) user is logged out, i am unable to establish the connection again! Why, can anyone helps on this? Because i've tried to search on the web, cant find the solution... thanks a lot....
But when the user is logged out, it cant be connected, how?

A. To start the server on the linux box, as the user type:
$ vncserver
It will come back with something like "started server on localhost:1" (I can't remember the exact syntax - the bit you are interested in is the :1)
To connect to this from another computer (running windoze, linux or any other client) you must use the :1 bit too, ie connect to:
machinename:1
Because linux is a true multiuser environment you are able to launch multiple desktops, :1, :2, :3 etc. These go over ports 5901, 5902, 5903 etc. Windoze (not being multiuser) does not allow you to start a new desktop for a VNC session and only allows you the one which goes over port 5900 and is machinename:0

How do I set up a Call of Duty 4 Cracked linux server?
Q. I have searched everywhere and I can't find a tutorial to create a cracked cod4 linux server. Is there anyone who knows where to find one?

A. That's because a tutorial won't help you. You need experience to figure it out.

I'm looking for software to run on a linux server that can be used to validate user access to my VB software?
Q. I've developed a program in Visual Basic and would like to distribute it be able to have the software check a linux server to see if the userid that is used to login to the software is both valid AND unique (to prevent duplicate logins).

Any suggestion on what I can use?
my VB application is a desktop application.

The verification software would be on the server on the internet.

The users could create their own password... I'd assign userids.

I know that something custom could be written, but I'd like to avoid that if there's an off-the-shelf solution.

A. take a look at using openldap

linux distribution would offer new things that windows dosent. It would be nice if the distribution was free. I was also wondering how much i should partition off for linux

A. Linux is petty good in not taking up much space. I'd recommend partitioning about half as it is the easiest option and is done by default in most Linux installers.

As for which distro, that is a matter of personal preference. I personally like openSUSE and use it both at home and at work.
http://opensuse.org

Many recommend Ubuntu for beginners. However I despise the Gnome interface, so I'd go with Kubuntu (Ubuntu with the KDE interface.

In any distro, to get multimedia files to play and 3d acceleration to work, you will have to do some tweaking. This is due to the fact that many of these drivers and codecs are proprietary. Older ATi graphics cards can be iffy under Linux. The graphics will work, but you may not have 3d acceleration.

Playing DVDs may even require you to break the law by downloading decss to break DVD encryption. Seems odd to have to break the law to allow the legal use of your DVD, doesn't it?

There are guides for getting all that to work.

What is the Linux distribution that you can boot directly from CD and run without installation?
Q. I once had a 1-CD Linux distribution. I could boot from the CD and run the OS without installing it on the hard drive. It is very useful when you want to do some experiments in Linux but don't want to mess up with all the (Windows) stuff on the hard drive. I forgot the name of the distribution. Can anybody tell me? Thanks!

A. it's called Knoppix. go here: www.knoppix.org

There's also a distribution of Linspire (which has a similar interface to windows) which can be run live but it is not free like knoppix.

What is a good Linux distribution for a flash drive?
Q. I want a Linux distribution to install to my 8gb flash drive that is light on system resources. (I will be running it on older computers and speed is a must.)

I don't want something like Puppy Linux because you are always running as root and I'm concerned with security. No DSL either. I have had graphics problems with that one on some of my computers.

All help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Can I run Vindictus on linux through steam?
Q. Hello, I use ubuntu and since steam can run on linux i was wondering if i can play Vindictus through steam on my laptop.

A. No, looks like it uses HackSheild, which freaks out in a WINE envirment

Always check appbd.winehq.org in the future for these types of questions.

"What works
Installation. $ winetricks ie6 corefonts for 64 bit users, WINEARCH=win32 is necessary to install ie6. ie8 was tested, but didn't work.

What does not
Starting the game. It crashes on startup due to HackShield."

How can I play steam games on my Mac?
Q. I have Boot Camp with the steam games, but i want to know if i can somehow play them while running OS X. I have the newest version 10.5.7 if that helps anything. I have Parallels and Vmware Fusion but they suck at playing games. Please Help ( If you don't know what steam games are they are just normal PC games that are easier to keep up with.)

A. You probably want to look at CrossOver Games, a WINE-based system that allows you to play Windows games on Linux or Mac computers without purchasing a copy of Windows. COG is around $40.

See: http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxgames/

Another option would be to purchase and install a copy of Windows under Boot Camp, assuming you're running OS X 10.5 ("Leopard") or higher. You'd have to reboot your Mac into Windows. Downsides: You will have to re-partition your hard drive, making room for Windows, and of course, you also have to purchase a copy of Windows. Upsides: Since you're actually running Windows, any game you install/run should operate no differently than if you were playing it on a non-Mac Windows PC.

One more approach would be to try a virtual PC solution such as Parallels or VMWare Fusion. See the websites for these products to see what their capabilities are, and how likely they are to run your games.

http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/
http://www.parallels.com/

With Parallels or VMWare Fusion, you'll need to purchase the application, plus a copy of Windows.

linux for dummies" today at the book store and noticed that it said 9th edition on it. Does this mean that its just a rewritten, updated version or does it mean that you also need the 1st through 8th editions for it to make sense? in other words, can i buy this book without having to buy the others and still learn all i need to know?

A. It could mean it's been revised 9 times, therefore making it 9th edition, or it is as you said, i am unsure.

How do I get itunes on Linux using Wine? I've looked it up but all the tutorials are so confusing...?
Q. Use as much description for a dummy like me, please and thank you.

A. While it's possible to make it install and run under Wine, it's still very, VERY buggy that way. For example, it will crash if you try to go to the iTunes store. Here's an article about alternatives (one of which is to run iTunes in a virtual machine):

im thinking of getting rid of windows xp and having linux operating system, but how do i do that?
Q. the reason y i want to get rid of mswindows xp is because it takes up alot of hard disk space and ram, i have only 128 mb of ram. do u think i shud get linux? if i do, i wont be able 2 have microsoft applications like windows media player and microsoft office etc.., what shud i do? get linux or stay with microsoft office?

A. Linux is great, but it's also very different from Windows.
Switching to Linux may prove a huge challenge if you're not good with computers.
Indeed you will not have Windows Media Player or Office under Linux, but good, free applications are available for Linux that replace WMP or Office rather conveniently.
If you want to give it a try, I would suggest picking up a book about Linux for newcomers (e.g. "Linux for Dummies") before doing anything else.

A. There are many flavours so you need to decide what you want to do with it (use it as a server, as a desktop etc). There are distributions who offer Live CD's. You boot up from a Live CD and are able to test that particular distribution without actually having to install it until you decide it's good for you.

Search on the net for tips about choosing a linux distribution.

Ubuntu should be good for a beginner.

How can I start Linux and what distribution do you think I should use?

How do you think I should start and what distribution do you recommend for a beginner who plans on programming and the like?Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.

A. I thoroughly recommend two Linux distros.

Linux Mint 9 Main Edition which is based upon Ubuntu 10.04

Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) which is based upon Debian Lenny/Squeeze

Both are easy to install and use plus they come with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

HowTo install Nvidia Graphics Drivers on Debian
http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Installapre-builtmodule

Alternatively install Linux Mint as a dual-boot with Windows using mint4win without partitioning mint4win works the same as Wubi as described below (not available on Linux Mint Debian)
http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/wubi

You keep Windows as it is, mint4win only adds an extra option to boot into Linux Mint. mint4win does not require you to modify the partitions of your PC, or to use a different bootloader, and does not install special drivers. It works just like any other application.

mint4win keeps most of the files in one folder, and if you do not like it, you can simply uninstall it as any other application.

Boot in to windows insert the Linux Mint LiveCD and you will offered the option of installing inside windows which is where the mint4win installer comes in, you will be asked how many gigabytes you wish to allocate to Linux Mint (I recommend 8gb) then you set a password for your installation then click install and thats it.

Once Linux Mint is fully installed upon starting your PC you will be given a choice of which operating system you want to use Windows or Linux Mint

You download the ISO. image of Linux Mint 9 or Linux Mint Debian then you need to create a Bootable LiveCD/DVD for installation

Linux Mint 9 and Linux Mint Debian can also be run direct from the LiveCD/DVD from Booting up without touching your Hard Drive

How can I remove Linux from my computer and restore the partition space to windows?
Q. I have both Linux Mint 11 and windows 7 on my computer and I no longer want it on my computer so... ya, pretty much says it all in the title.

A. (NOTE: A page titled "How to uninstall Fedora" was added to the project wiki after this blog was published, as noted in the comment section below in a post titled "Contribution is easy.")

Try "remove Fedora."

Nothing.

Go to Ubuntu's official documentation site and search for "uninstall Ubuntu."

You won't find anything in the "official" documentation but in the "community" section you find two entries that state "Wubi allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu...."

In an installed Ubuntu distribution, clicking on Help and searching for uninstalling or removing Ubuntu finds nothing. A link ârepeat the search online at the Ubuntu help pagesâ brings up a 404 â page not found.

If you look hard enough on the real community support pages you'll find a post from July 2007 titled "HowTo: Remove Ubuntu (& Restore Windows)" .

Have a cow
The post starts out: "Okay, I know some people are going to have a cow because I'm posting this."

(No kidding. Just take a look at the excoriating flames that are sure to appear in the comments section of this blog.)

OpenSUSE does better. A search there finds the page titled SDB:How to Uninstall Linux from December 2006. The page includes more than 1,300 words to describe various processes.

Go to Google and search "install Linux" and you get about 1,450,000 hits. Try "uninstall Linux" and you get about 16,800. "Remove Linux" gets you about 53,300.

Why is it so hard to find instructions to remove Linux and then so hard to actually do it?

Why can't you just easily find the uninstall procedure in a help file, and click a button and follow the instructions?

Windows makes it easy
Opening the Windows XP Help and Support Center and searching for "uninstall Windows" brings up, first thing, "Uninstall Windows XP" and a 5-step process from the Control Center.

Did you know that in a dual-boot install Linux will partition your hard disk and if you remove the partitions without restoring the Master Boot Record on your boot-up disk, your computer won't start?

Did you know you'll likely need separate applications such as fixmbr or fdisk or partitioning software to get your system back the way it was, hopefully having not lost any data? Or you may need to change a BIOS setting to boot to a Windows CD and use its "Recovery Console?" These all depend on your version of Linux. Again, openSUSE seems to do the best job in automating the process, with the "YaST2 Control Center."

Oh, and if that dual installation included Windows, and partitions were resized, "Microsoft does not support Windows installed on partitions manipulated in this manner."

So it's just you and that Linux documentation. Good luck.

Now, I don't have any great love for Windows and I like Linux. I really do. I'm going to use it and learn a lot more about it.

But if you're a newbie like me, you'd best be warned. Searching various Linux forums finds a lot of users who have had problems uninstalling the OS and have lost data in the process.

Go back to Windoze? You're stupid
And while there are some helpful Linux aficionados who try to help these people out -- and others searching for uninstall help -- there are too many posters who take the attitude along the lines of: "Why would you want to uninstall Linux? That's crazy. You must be stupid to want to go back to Windoze."

If you want to try Linux out while keeping Windows, it's a real good idea to try it from a "live" Linux CD/DVD instead of installing it on a hard disk. Iâve tried several. The response is slower, of course, but you get an idea of how it works and donât risk losing anything. For Ubuntu the Wubi installer accomplishes the same thing by treating Ubuntu as a Windows application.

Do your homework
If you do install Linux on a disk, make sure you do a full system backup. And make sure you have a bootable "rescue" or "system" CD. And really do your homework. Read up on disk partitioning and logical volumes and extended partitions and mounts; and GRUB and LILO bootloaders; and NTFS, FAT 32 and ext3 file systems; and gparted and maybe the commercial app Partition Magic -- which supposedly merges/resizes partitions without destroying data -- and so on.

Then read it all again. And be careful our there.

How do I turn my PS3 to its normal state from the Linux Boot up?
Q. I have PS3 60 GB, and I have tried to install Linux. And when I have done, then I restarted my PS3. But when I did that, a black linux boot screen showed up instead of the the normal PS3 system. And when i am in that boot screen, it says that i have to install or just try out the Linux. How do get to the normal PS3 system from there?

A. 1. Turn the PS3 off (into standby).
2. Turn it on by holding the PS3's power button for about 5 seconds until you hear a second beep.
3. The PS3 will boot to the XMB OS and go back to default video settings.

Now that you're back in the PS3's XMB you can format the hard drive and remove linux (and its partition) from the hard drive. Back any PS3 game save files up before you do so, because they will all be deleted as well.

Q. I am looking for the best linux os distro that could boot straight from my flash drive.

Something like knoppix but for flash.

Another question, with that, can you access the hard drive and store information? Like to fix a windows machine?

A. You can run this of CD, USB, and even in RAM
http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/

To intall to USB drive:
First, boot up your computer from the DSL livecd, frugal, or USB-frugal. Note that it is not possible to do a USB install, or any other kind of install from a DSL Embedded system.

In the Fluxbox menu, go Apps >> Tools >> Install to USB Pendrive and choose either USB-ZIP emulation or USB-HDD emulation, depending on what is supported by your computer's bios.

Here are a few tips on how to remove packages from modules rather easily and quickly. It might be the method you use, but it seems to me, by what you writ,e that you just remove files you find an not the entire package(s).
Here's how I do it (Wolvix 1.1.0):

1. Extract the module to a temporary directory:

lzm2dir name_of_module.lzm tempdirectory/2. Inside the 'tempdirectory/' look for the var/log/packages/ folder. Inside it is a list of all packages which have been installed to the module. Since the packages have been installed to the modules we can uninstall them with the 'removepkg' command, just like you would on Slackware, but there's a little trick to it. You have to use the 'ROOT=' parameter. Here's an example:

ROOT=tempdirectory/ removepkg name_of_packageThe 'ROOT=' parameter tells the system to remove the package from the target directory and not from the system it self.
Example:

ROOT=tempdirectory/ removepkg audaciousYou can also remove several packages at once:

ROOT=tempdirectory/ removepkg audacious streamtuner mplayerOnce one or more packages have been removed from the module, look in tempdirectory/var/log/removed_packages and tempdirectory/var/log/removeed_scripts.
In those dirs you'll see the list of removed packages and scripts. You don't need those files anymore, so you can just delete them if you want. They are just log files.

linux virtual machine on my windows (using vmware/vpc) and use it to mount the NFS partition. Will it work? Is there any other way? Some other software.
I don't have admin access to the partition. Basically, I dont have any support from my sys admin too. (hypothetically :)

A. First, you can try Start->Run and enter //servername

Do you have admin access to the Linux machine? You could install a Samba server to it and mount it from there.

What are the down sides of using a virtual machine instead of a host machine?
Q. Currently I'm using windows 7 and wanted to install Linux Mint. I thought of using a virtual machine because i don't want to reboot too much. So does the performance go down if i use a virtual machine? How much of the memory should i dedicate to the virtual machine?

A. It's OK to get a quick look at a different OS, but I wouldn't recommend it for long term use.
Your 'virtual machine' uses virtual hardware for important things like your sound and graphics card, so you'll never see it how it's supposed to be.

You'd be better of using a 'wubi' type install (called mint4win in earlier versions of Mint, but sadly not available in the latest version) Wubi installs the Linux OS inside a Windows folder and automatically adjusts your Windows boot loader. You do need to reboot to use it, but you get the full power of your system with the real sound and graphics card used - and obviously all the RAM too.

Ubuntu and a lot of it's clones can all utilise the 'wubi' method. It's the ideal way to run Linux for beginners. No partitioning or messing with boot loaders, which are the main sticking points for most newcomers. It's much faster than a 'live' CD and it uses your real hardware, unlike a virtual install

What is the best Virtual Machine for Linux?
Q. If I want to run Windows inside Linux, what is the best Virtual Machine software to use?

A. I thoroughly recommend VirtualBox 4.0 which has been recently released. Assuming you are working with Ubuntu see the tutorial below

A. The Linux Desktop is currently a mess with a plethora of options available. Unity as on Ubuntu 11.10 and GNOME 3 as on Fedora 16 are cluttered and in my opinion not suitable for use on a production machine. I need a Desktop Environment that allows me to just get things done with minimal fuss. This is where the older Gnome 2 Desktop Environment excels.

Linux Mint 12 goes some way to addressing this wth MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) which is a layer built on top of GNOME 3 however like other distros. such as Fedora to deploy the GNOME 3 Desktop Environment for me does not convince

There is a new project being developed by Linux Mint called Cinnamon however as with MGSE it is a layer built on top of GNOME 3

I thoroughly recommend the earlier release Linux Mint 11 which is built upon Ubuntu 11.04 Its easy to install and easy to use plus it comes with much of the software you are likely to need preinstalled

How can I build a Linux Distro?
Q. I have downloaded the latest stable kernel. How can I make a linux distro from scratch? What do I need?

A. Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with step-by-step instructions for building your own custom Linux system, entirely from source code.
http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/

Alternatively, you can easily customize your own Slax linux live right from your browser. If you are new to Linux you probably want to start with something like that.

What are some lightweight linux distros that look good?
Q. I'm looking for a lightweight Linux distro that doesn't look horrible.

A. Sorry to say they look horrible because they are lightweight :P they cut out all the fancy looks to make it lightweight

Here are to good ones.

what are my chances to become a Linux System Administrator at 48?
Q. I am trying to change career(unemployed) and I am a newbie in technology except that I did some html & CSS. I wonder if I study Linux for a year & maybe pass a linux+ certification I will be able to get an entry level position? Is it too old at 48 to try? Or maybe should I focus on something like PHP/Mysql? I am trying to decide what would be the easy road and the rewarding one as well. Thanks.

A. With RHCE, you are never too old.

Is Linux System Administration worth trying in my case?

linux machine, though I doubt that's relevant.

This ear I am taking 8 different senior highschool courses, and I have a habit of aimlessly looking for funny things on the internet. I need to block my favorite websites until I'm in good habits. Like putting a padlock on the fridge when you know your weakness.

A. First of all âhostsâ is the name of the file not the folder. Please refer to the screenshot above.

Ok, letâs start from the first step. When you typed
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in the run command, were you not able to see the file named âhostsâ getting opened in notepad?

If not, then copy the hosts file from other computer to your targeted computer at the location %windir%\system32\drivers\etc

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to the computer buyer when using one of the free?
Q. operating systems such as google chrome and linux rather than windows?

A. i don't know about linux
but google chrome was designed to be fast
A great OS for something like net books that are only really good for watching videos and social networking
so it woulnd;t be able to do much in the way of gaming or high demand software

that was the last time i herd about google chrome a while ago it might be different now

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages to the computer buyer when using one of the free?
Q. operating systems such as google chrome or linux rather than windows?

A. 1 If the computer already comes with Windows, there's no point in wiping it to install a free OS (although that is what I would do)

Pros:
It's free :)
There is a large and supportive community for some linux OSes (if you're willing to learn a little bit)
Linux is highly customizable
There is a lot of cool effects available for some GUI's
Most of the software is free open source alternatives to Windows software
Any one can modify the code of software to improve it
Little to no virus problems, I have no antivirus installed
Being made easier all teh time

Cons:
Can be difficult to migrate from windows
A lot of things are difficult to do (although constantly being made easier)
Some Windows software can be difficult to get working in linux
Software is open source so anyone can modify/look at the code (pro or con)
Difficult to choose a good distro
A lot of command line typing

All in all migrating to linux is a good strategy if you want to save a few hundred $ and are really willing to learn. If you want everything to just work the same then save yourself the anger and just pay out. If you really are willing to learn however there are many people who will help you get started with linux.

Original Question

How can I activate my graphics card driver in my Linux Mint Debian Edition?
Q. I just installed Linux Mint Debian Edition(LMDE). Unlike the Ubuntu based Mint, This one can't automatically detect the graphics card and doesn't show the notification in the tray, so I can't use animations and Compiz effects.

Any help?

A. For Nvidia GeForce Cards (6200 upwards)

Open a Terminal and submit the following command (copy and paste)

sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri-experimental

Close the Terminal and REBOOT

Questioning the mentality of Debian purists with regards to the spurning of Linux Mint Debian Edition.?
Q. It is quite understandable why there is noise from the Debian purists about Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distros. but Linux Mint Debian Edition surely they are spurning their own 'The Wonderful World Of Linux Politics'

Your thoughts ?

A. Mint Debian is the next Ubuntu, now that Ubuntu has gone off the deep end. This is assuming Clem finds competent help in developing it. Can you imagine Mint's tiny team serving a community as large as Ubuntu's? It's inhuman as it is, the stellar OS they put out for what seems to be the whiniest userbase of any distro (read the blog comments). Everyone has a completely uninformed, kneejerk opinion in the Linux world, so I just ignore the average user's crankiness. I doubt it's Debian purists who object to LMDE, more like Debian posers who think an OS is a status symbol. Ignore them. Mint Debian does need a bit of refinement --at least it did when a tried it a few months ago-- but I feel it's the future. We'll even get used to Gnome 3 somehow...we'll have to, and it's improving every day from what I can tell, though I don't use it.
Think of the whiners switching to XFCE because they don't like Gnome 3, or the huge hissy fit that erupted when KDE 4 was released. I sit in bemused observation of every supposed crisis. The open source community mostly consists of reasonable and knowledgeable people, it's the newcomers to Linux that form factions and are demanding; the same ones who throw a fit about every little bug but have never filed a bug report, and if they did file a bug report it would be more nonconstructive b1tching anyway. Don't even take them seriously.

Original Question

To learn linux what distro should I use?
Q. I want to become a Mysql DBA therefore I need to learn linux. What distro should i use between: Mandriva 8. Fedora 8 and Unbutu 7.2?
Also I might use a wireless so I don't want any issue and spending days configuring that. I need a user friendly distro to handle my wireless connection & mysql/PHP duties.

A. Considering you will be spending the bulk of your time messing with mysql itself and your linux viewpoint will mostly be a shell command line and an editor, it probably doesn't matter all that much.

Consider that corps almost always play it safe. That means they go with something that provides support. In the US that primarily means Redhat,, Suse, or Ubuntu. Possibly Fedora or Centos.

Check around to see if you wireless card is support. If not, get one that is. Its not like they are a big expense these days.

If I learn Linux for 6 months can I get an entry level job?
Q. I am planning to learn Linux for 6 months ( about 3H per day). Will I be ab;le to find a job as entry level easly or not? If not what should I learn to make it happen ? Thx.

A. "Learning Linux" does not get you a job. If it did, I wouldn't be unemployed. You need to learn more than just how to use various GUIs or a couple bash commands. You need to learn stuff like administrating a web server, secure networking, etc... I've been using Linux a solid year and haven't mastered those yet. You will not learn it in six months only spending a little time on it.

Original Question

How do I turn my Ubuntu/Linux PC into a server for my Windows 7 PC?
Q. Is this a good idea? Will my Windows PC get extra protection since I will be going on the Internet using the Ubuntu as a server, as an intermediary? How difficult is it to do this?

A. This question is pretty poorly designed. There is no "Server for windows" in Linux. You can do several things with linux and connect/use them from windows though. You can make linux a firewall and router, connect it to your cable/dsl modem so you can have multiple computers use your internet connection at one time. You can run web, ftp, and other servers for files and web pages. You can also run Samba which allows you to access and store files on the linux hard driver over the network. linux also makes a GREAT extension to your windows environment using things like xdmcp, rdp, ssh, scp. if you do not know what any of these terms are, google is your buddy. You can also set up a web proxy using linux and this could definitely be used to increase your web browsing security in windows by blocking malicious web sites. Pretty much anything you want to do with Linux is limited by you and your willingness to learn.

Nothing is simple click and go in linux. You have to be willing to experiemnt, read, and learn.

How do you transfer files from the command line in Red Hat Linux?
Q. I'm trying to transfer files from a Fedora Core to the host server, which is a Red Hat v 8. How do I do it from the command line?

A. Well there are several ways to do this. They depend on what servers are running on the host machine. If you can ssh to the host server, then the best way is "scp <filename> <host machine>:<filename>". If this is not setup you can try ftp or one of the disk sharing protocols like Samba or NFS.

How to have linux VPS keep running java server?
Q. I have the server an all working.
Minecraft server actually.
But I noticed the server will stop when I close my putty the server will server aswell.
How do I get it to constantly run? Even if my computer is off or not

A. one way would be to use nohup. just start your program with something like:
nohup ./yourprogram
that will keep the program alive, even when you log out. but this will not work with programs that take input from the console.
another way is to use a screen session (if screen is installed). with the command "screen" you start a shell session in which you can then start programs. if you press ctrl+a, ctrl+d (in that order), the session gets detached and will continue after you log out. after logging in, you can resume the session with "screen -r sessionname".
for more informations, try "man screen" or "man nohup".

Original Question

How can i uninstall linux from my pc and switch to windows?
Q. After modifying my BIOS I installed 'red hat- enterprise linux 5'. I had to enable the hard disk drive mode into RAID from IDE before installing. Now when i attempted to install windows, i turned the hard disk mode into IDE from RAID. But when i entered the windows installation cd, there is no installation page displayed. Please help!!!

A. What DO you see on your screen when you use the windows cd?
Is your bios set to boot from cd?
If all else fails google for dos boot disk and one of those would let you reformat and partition you hard drive. THen try the windows cd again.
Good luck

I need a good practical source from which I can learn how to use red hat Linux any suggestions ?
Q. I do not need a cluttered source, I already tried official guides but those are too long and boring (Same thing with a " a practical guide to fedora and RHEL). I am just looking for a short hand book that teaches the basics of red hat enterprise Linux (create file, search files, move files, list processes, file permissions ....). Please help

A. At this level you can probably work with any book that covers Unix/Linux basics. Red Hat specifics are probably not so relevant initially. (Certainly you should be able to mix and match Fedora, CentOS, and RedHat.)

I've used books from the "Dummy's Guide" series before, and although I've not looked at the Linux one specifically it might be worth seeing if you can borrow it from your local library.

There's an interesting looking YouTube series, too.

Finally, depending on where and in which country you live, there may be a Linux Users Group nearby. Some of them are a bit geeky (possibly too geeky) but you should find people there who are happy to spend some time with you, maybe over a beer, helping you learn.

linux fedora 4 on my computer to make it a server. But i want to do it so that it will run of the harddrive becaause i have a spare 250 gb that i want to use. So how can i put it on the computer itself instead of Virtual PC
A. You could repartition your hard disk, overwrite whatever existing system you have, or install a second hard disk.

Which ever you choose - get a more up to date version then Fedora 4, which is ancient. Go for Fedora 9 instead.

How to preserve "My Documents" while migrating from XP to Linux (Fedora)?
Q. Hi,

I want to get rid of Microsoft XP and install Fedora on my PC.
Is it possible to install LInux (Fedora) on my PC, preserve the contents of My Documents, and not make a backup somewhere out of the hard disk, where I am making the installation?

A. Hi, if you want to backup the files without using another harddrive then I would suggest partitioning your Harddrive before you install Linux.

Go to Start>Run and type "diskmgmt.msc" in the run command. Press Ok and a new window should open. In Disk Management right click the drive you want to partition (usually the C: drive), select "Shrink Volume..." and then enter the amount of space you want to partition in the new window. Make sure it is enough space to copy all your files to. Select "Ok" and a new partition will be created.

Then copy all your files to the new partition, install Linux over the partition where XP is installed, then move all your files from the new partition onto the partition where you replaced XP with Linux, and once all the files are moved back into Linux you can use "parted" or whatever disk partitioning software Linux has to delete the new partition.

As you can see this might be easier if you buy an external drive instead.

Can Linux Fedora 17 run on an old laptop?
Q. I have a laptop with an Intel Celeron M 1.4 GHz processor and 256 MB of RAM. How well can Linux Fedora 17 run on that? I checked the release notes but could not find anything definitive.

A. Try one of the Fedora spins with a lighter-weight desktop.
